Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Banks

For supper tonight, CDW-G treated us to a meal at Harry Caray's. While we were there, Mr. Ernie Banks sat at the table in the corner behind us!!

I tried to get a flashless, non-obvious photo:

Well, after the meal, a group of us were standing outside, mulling about, and Mr. Banks came out and walked right over to us and stuck out his hand. "Hi, I'm Ernie Banks." I was in awe. I shook his hand, looked him in the eye, and said, "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Banks." Ernie freakin' Banks!! How cool is that!?!?

I tried to take another picture as he loaded his car, but my camera did not like being flashless at dusk, so it came out blurry - UGH!

I don't care about the picture! I met and shook hands with the great Ernie Banks, and that is more than good enough for me!

  1. Awesome! I can respect a chance meeting with Mr. Cub!

It's strange, we're talking about a long retired player and my verification is "upast".

  4. That is a great story. I have heard that he is a very nice man when you get a chance to meet him. I, however, have lived around the Chicagoland are for 27 years now and have not had the pleasure of running into him. Once again, great story!

  5. Fantastic. Why do you suppose he came over to you? Did you say something to him first? Or, was it just obvious that his presence had turned you into a schoolboy (like it would have done to me) and he knew you would be thrilled to meet him?

Or, maybe he recognized you from your blog?

  7. Ha ha, so he just came up out of nowhere and said he was Ernie Banks?? How funny. Can you imagine how awkward it'd have been if you had no idea who he was??

"Hi, I'm Joe Orsulak"... umm... kay?

Cool run-in, though! I once met Darryl Strawberry more or less the same way outside of Yankee Stadium. I got "just" a handshake (had nothing on me to have signed, and he probably would've been so approachable if I had) but it's something I'll never forget.

Sorry for relating a story about Banks to one about Strawberry!

  8. Well, I can only think that when he came out, he recognized us since our table was in front of his at supper. I probably did have that 'shocked and awed' look on my face when he came out of the restaurant. It just blew me away that he came up to us and stuck his hand out! It was really funny afterward because other people were gawking and doing the 'is that....??' thing, and we were like, "yeap.." and thinking, "And he shook our hands, too." :-)

    Very friendly man.
