Giving by Proxy and Speaking to The Hobby #collecting

Despite the title, I'm starting with the second part of it: Speaking to The Hobby.

Earlier today, I had a message from "The Hobby" delivered through Mark Aubrey. Many of you in "The Hobby" will know him from his posts over at "Mark's Ephemera." "The Hobby" and I had grown a bit distant following the season's pack breaking, and I have no choice but to admit (and accept) fault there. I stepped away from the hobby, at least online anyway. I still have packs to put together from the summer's pack breaks. I know, I know. But, there is no getting around it. Frankly, I had grown of tired of seeing "The Hobby" every single day. I took a break. That break stretched into something that lasted longer than a Kardashian marriage and an A&E suspension added together. The road ahead is still pretty grueling: namely, I am still sorting through cards to be sent out to all your GREAT readers that played along this past baseball season. But, as I am off for the holiday break, I can assure you that the packages will be mailed before January 10, 2014. No more messing around and putting it off.

I received a plethora of packs for Christmas from various friends and family members. That simple act also helped me rekindle the love I have for collecting these bits of cardboard. My "Non-Indians" collection has been seriously lacking over the past few years, and several of the cards I got for Christmas will find their way into that collection. I also bought a couple packs of Panini's latest offerings. I bought 1 pack each of "Cooperstown" and "Hometown Heroes."

Here are some samples from "Cooperstown." I pulled a Triber! That's a sure sign "The Hobby" and I are well on our path to recovery. I also pulled a disc and a "Museum" card (among other cards in the pack):

The "Hometown Heroes" cards are an interesting lot. I pulled a lenticular disc, Joey Votto (posting that one for Joe C), and Josh Reddick (among others). I posted the Reddick to show off what can be done with a skilled Photoshopper. In fact, all the cards have a pretty well-done sleight of hand, considering Panini has no MLB licensing rights due to the Topps monopoly, er contract.

Now, getting to the "Giving by Proxy" portion of tonight's post: I received a couple packages that were temporarily, er, misplaced during the past month or so. One was from Backstop Cards with no note or anything! That one has a TON of cards in it! I will scan some of those and have them posted soon. The other envelope was from Brian Snider over at "Play at the Plate." Inside was a note that reads: "From Mark Aubrey via ME! (Enjoy!):

THANK YOU so much, Brian, Mark, and Marcus!!  It's good to be back.

Dude, Where's My Cards?

Believe it or not, I am still sorting and sifting through the cards we busted during the regular season! Holy smokes! I did not realize how many cards were still waiting to be handed out to their respective owners. Just when i thought I was getting close to done, I found another 800-count box that I thought was empty.

Let's just say it'll be a at least a week or so before I start shipping these out. While sorting, I did make a discovery or two. First, somehow Javier Vasquez was assigned to both Dayf and Jafronius. Dayf is the actual owner, according to the draft cycle. Second, I have several players that seem to have dodged the draft completely. Third, there were more than 100 players still left unclaimed after the last draft.

What's left to do? Let's enumerate, shall we?

  1. Finish sorting claimed players
  2. Assign multi-player cards to their owners
  3. Distribute all remaining cards randomly among managers
  4. Package and mail cards
Oh, speaking of packaging: Anyone that scored over-sized cards will receive at least two Tribecards from Outer Space packages. One will be a box (or boxes) of standard cards, and the other will be a mailer with the over-sized cards. Enjoy!

Package Mail-out Update

Hey everyone! It has been quite a while since I've written here, so I thought I'd let you know what is happening in the world of Tribecards.

I will be sending out the Group Break packages this weekend.

The Pack-A-Day/Outer Space packages will start shipping on Monday.

Sorry for the delay, but you're going to enjoy the cards for sure!

Thanks for reading and playing along!

Tribecards from Outer Space: 14 Rounds of Final Draft

Hey everyone!  Sorry it took so long to get the final draft done. What a doozy! We ended up going 14 rounds before everyone's picks played out. No one got shut out. Terry Francona scored the highest number of picks: Nine. Jafronius tried to sneak in a Curley Neal pick, but I caught it. Haha! Next season, I'll add in every card we uncover. Well, okay, maybe not EVERY card, but certainly some of the non-baseball.

I will update the player/manager list later this week and will get everyone's cards passed around this weekend. I should start mailing those out next week.  Upcoming posts will include a wrap-up and a couple surprise boxes I received! Wahoo!!

Here's how the final draft played out:
Notice one says "I'm not really Night..." That said that the person was not really Night Owl, but that Night should have the Steve Lyons card. I got a kick out of that. Whoever entered that, thanks for the laugh!

Here is the random order, minus the "I'm not Night Owl" entry:

Everyone placed in the random order: Jafronius is in white because I pasted his picks from an email.

You'll have to click on this one to see the final results. I included ALL the results since it went for 14 rounds! Whew!

I can't thank everyone enough for the patience and GREAT sportsmanship throughout the season breaks! I realize I was a bit "persnickety" at times and I fretted over things most folks never gave second-thought to, so I truly appreciate the camaraderie you had with/for each other when weird things would come up!  Thanks again!

Blaster Box Break: Box 7 - 1992 Leaf Series 2

Good Sunday afternoon, everyone! I tried to run through all the boxes in the wee hours of the morning, but I ran out of gas. So, this afternoon, I opened the final box in the Blaster Break.  Since this was a full box of cards and not just a blaster, I'm not listing every card. Instead, I'm posting the Gold Leaf cards and the Gold Leaf Rookies that went to participants. The rest of the cards (including other Gold Leaf and Gold Leaf Rookies) will be distributed randomly with the rest of the unclaimed cards from the break!

Eric Bell - Indians - Gold Leaf
John Doherty - Tigers - Gold Leaf Rookies
Travis Fryman - Tigers - Gold Leaf
Kevin Ritz - Tigers - Gold Leaf
Eric Davis - Dodgers - Gold Leaf
Trevor Wilson - Giants - Gold Leaf

Johnny Ruffin - White Sox - Gold Leaf Rookies
Mark Whiten - Indians - Gold Leaf
Ramon Martinez - Dodgers - Gold Leaf
Donovan Osborne - Cardinals - Gold Leaf Rookie
Tom Candiotti - Dodgers - Gold Leaf
Mike Sharperson - Dodgers - Gold Leaf

Congrats to everyone that took part! The true upside to having such a small group of participants is that we will get a huge amount of cards between us! Wahoo!!  I will try to get these sent out sometime this coming week. I will let you know when they've shipped so you can be looking for them!

Blaster Box Break: Box 6 - 1998 Pacific Online

There are 8 red foil cards and one gold web card per pack. I don't know if I have any of these in my collection or not. Let's rip 'er open!

  • Bartolo Colon - Indians - Tribecards
  • Robb Nen - Giants - Workman
  • Tino Martinez Gold - Yankees - CattleRustler

  • Shawon Dunston - Indians - Tribecards
  • Jim Corsi - Red Sox - CattleRustler
  • Barry Bonds - Giants - Workman

Blaster Box Break: Box 5 - 1998 Pacific Paramount

I am hoping to find at least a few die cuts or something in this box. Pacific was known for doing crazy things with their cards. Let's see what we've got:

  • Ivan Rodriguez Die Cut Team Checklist - Cool die cuts!!
  • Todd Stottlemyre Red Parallel - Cardinals - Madding
  • Justin Thompson- Tigers - Chris
  • Rickey Henderson - A's - Because it is freakin Rickey Henderson, that's why!

There was 1 Red parallel per pack. As it turns out, everyone gets one!

Blaster Box Break: Box 4 - 2004 UD R-Class

Two Rookie cards per pack on average!! I'm just repeating what the box says on it... Let's see if we can find some cards to add to our collections.

  • Scott Rolen - cardinals - Madding
  • Frank Thomas - White Sox - JediJeff
  • Merkin Valdez - Giants - Workman
  • Nomar Garciaparra - Red Sox - CattleRustler

Blaster Box Break: Box 3 - 2004 Topps Series 1

Wow! There are a lot of cards to go through: 22 packs with roughly 6 cards each. Let's hope for a relic! I am not going to list every card pulled for participants on this one. Let's look at some highlights:

  • Palmeiro Joins 500 Club - Because I think it's a cool card
  • Postseason Highlights Red Sox/Giants featured - CattleRustler/Workman
  • Bill Mueller Sporting News - Red Sox - Thought these were neat designs
  • MLB Sportsclix w/ Barry Bonds - Giants - Doubles of this card will be given to participants
  • Alex Gonzalex - Cubs - Because in 2004, should there be miscut cards!?
  • World Series Highlights Foil - Jim Palmer - Because it is FOIL and SHINY!
  • Javier Vazquez Gold - Because it is GOLD!
  • 100th Anniversary program cover - Mets/Red Sox - Two words: Old Glory
  • Todd Helton Own the Game - Rockies - Because this looks freakin awesome. What a cool card!
Well, given the number of Giants cards in this box, we have no one getting Punk'd or Skunk'd!

Blaster Box Break: Box 2 - 2012 Topps Chrome

Let's keep things going and break open a blaster box of 2012 Topps Chrome!

We had a couple of "hits" in this box, plus we reach the point at which no one got Skunk'd! Only Workman has the potential to get Punk'd, and with 5 more boxes to open, I'm pretty sure he'll pull another Giants card ... eventually.

  • Austin Romine - Yankees - CattleRustler
  • Andre Ethier - Dodgers - Stealing Home

  • Josh Beckett - Red Sox - CattleRustler
  • Yadier Molina Purple Refractor - Cardinals - Madding
  • Matt Hague Purple Refractor - Pirates - It's a purple refractor, that's why!
  • Elvis Andrus Purple Refractor - Rangers - See above!
  • Michael Taylor Purple Refractor - A's - Take on down, pass it around...

Blaster Box Break: Box 1 - 2010 Allen & Ginter

In honor of Gint-A-Cuffs coming to a close, I thought it befitting to start the break off with some A&G. Though we didn't score any game-used or other relic cards, there were some cards worth noting:

  • Drew Brees - Because his kid is what makes this card!
  • Alex Rodriguez This Day in History - Yankees - CattleRustler
  • White-Tailed Deer Mini - Because when I was a kid, I did a preso on them for 4-H

Blaster Box Group Break happening tonight!

I had seven people sign up, claiming 8 teams for the Blaster Box Break. Oh, I know, it is already 11:30pm CST on Saturday. Well, I decided I was too anxious to check out some of these boxes, so I am busting them tonight!  There will be no video. Sorry. Instead, I will break each box and show off highlights, oddities, etc.

As per the rules, all unclaimed teams will be divided among each slot taken (meaning Cattle Rustler gets two slots!).

I will post each box as a separate entry on the blog, So keep watching! The only box that probably won't be fully busted tonight is the full box of Leaf.  Then again, as the wee hours of the morning creep in, I may just have to take a break. We'll see how it goes!

Stay Tuned!

Tribecards from Outer Space: The final draft is upon us

Hello, everyone!  In case you were wondering, I *PASSED* my Apple Certified Macintosh Technician certification!!  Wahoo!!  I appreciate everyone's patience as I stepped away from the clubhouse to take care of that business.

And now that the certification business is done, we've got some massive drafting ahead.

We have nearly 300 players in this draft, the final draft!  There is no way I am going to administer a final draft in which every possible player could be drafted. Instead, I have a different solution (though, technically, it could still result in every player being drafted). The final draft features 25 draft slots. Choose wisely. Well, actually, as we've seen this season, wisely has nothing to do with it. The randomizer will hold the fortunes of all managers in its grubby little paws.

Each of the 25 slots has all 300 listed (though I noticed a few names spelled wrongly in the list. Don't worry, I know who the players are and will fix things before everything wraps up.).

Managers pick your players just as you have all season. I will randomize the order and run the draft.

Player cards not drafted after all is said and done will be randomly distributed among all the managers who have previously claimed at least one player. I say that because I had people sign up that never drafted nor selected one single player. Ever. Why sign up? I dunno.  Anyway, notice I said "Play cards." That's because I am not sorting the leftover cards by player. Instead, all leftovers will be shuffled, stacked up and handed out in a random order. Naturally, the random order will be determined by random.org - why change a bad system now, right?

After the results are posted, I will distribute the multi-player cards to one of the managers owning a player on the card. This will take a bit of doing because we ended up with a bunch, so I will sort through those. Any duplicates will be handed out equally among owners. Otherwise, I will do my best to see that everyone affected gets a 'fair share' of multi-player cards.

So, back to the draft!  I will close the draft on Monday, October 7, 2013 at roughly 6pm. Then, I will wait for Google Docs to do whatever it does and we will run the draft on Tuesday, October 8 sometime that evening/night!

Let's look at a handful of highlights:

  • Joba Chamberlain - I was just shocked he was still available.
  • B.J. Wallace - Cool card design and also card #1 in the 1993 O-Pee-Chee set.
  • Carlos Guillen - Shiny Bowman's Best
  • J.R. Graham - That card is seriously purple. I mean, PUR-PLE.
  • Mark Teahen - The Pennant Chasers design jumps out at me. I like it.
  • Harold Baines - Seriously!? I even searched through everything to make sure that was right.
  • Terry Francona - Current manager of the Tribe, back when he was still knocking about.
  • Chris Dickerson - VERY shiny yellow card!
  • Brian Jordan - I always thought these '91 Pre-Rookies were a great idea.

Tribecards from Jonesboro, AR: Loosey Goosey Wrap Up

Good evening, friends! Well, I finally managed to get all the loose cards into the list except for the 1994 Topps factory set. Frankly, I don't see it happening online. I will divvy those up and sort them by manager. Any free agents still around after the final draft will be randomly distributed along with the other non-sport/multi-player cards.

Remember, if the multi-player cards name specific players, or I was able to name specific players on the card, I will divvy those up among the featured manager-owners.

In the meantime, here is a link to the whole loose-card shootin match:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlZ8vNjtCJDAdFIzTUtTLTZPazZJMkx2OTJTWjZZTFE&usp=sharing

Please let me know if I messed anyone's cards up. There's a pretty good chance of that since I was not able to use my Access database, and instead had to rely on a Google Spreadsheet.

Here are a few pics:

Since I will be working on my Apple Certification, I'll be taking a break for a couple days. Before I do, though, I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone that played along, chipped in, and exercised extreme patience as we worked through the various kinks in the program!  This was a LOT of fun!!

I will get the Free Agents lined out and we will have our final Free Agent draft in the very near future (in all likelihood, it will run late this Friday and go through the weekend while I do the Blaster Box Break).

Remember, you can still sign up for the Blaster Box Break, too!!  Just click the picture of the goodies in the upper right corner of my page.

Tribecards from Jonesboro: A few free agents

As I am going through the loose cards, I thought I would stop a moment before my Mac Cert class to post a couple pics of some free agents:

As you can see, I broke those into two parts.

See my previous post for the loose card break link. It isnt done yet, so check back each night for updates as I am able to add them.

Tribecards from Jonesboro, AR: Take Two

Yes, I am back in Jonesboro, Ar, again this week as the Mac training gets hands-on.

This final 'break' of the season actually consists of a large number of loose cards. Nearly 800 random years, makes and models plus a purportedly full 1994 Topps factory set.  This will, by far, be the most cards busted, sorted, and assigned in the history of Tribecards.

In fact, in order to prevent this blog space from getting out of control, I am going to list all the cards in a sortable Google Spreadsheet. That should keep life simple. As for pictures, I will select stand-outs or notables for photos.

After this break is done, I will have all the free agents ready for the final draft.

Actually, if you are so inclined, you can watch things unfold as I enter the information (or check back at random intervals)... Note: This will take longer than I ever thought! Haha! So, I will spread this out during this week. Sorry for the delay, but we'll just call this the Post-Season! Haha!

Just visit the link below:
