182 Packs of Baseball - 087 - Bye, June

Today, we bid farewell to the month of June. It's been a great month for busting wax.  before we leave it behind, however, we have one more pack to open this month:

1986 Donruss ML All-Stars

You would have thought a "1986" pack of cards would have been perfect for yesterday, given it was the 86th day. I guess the cardboard gods were not with us.  Or maybe they were. We showed some nice cards. Hakuna Matata - it's in the past now!

Hank Aaron Puzzle - 55, 56, 57
LaMarr Hoyt - Padres

Ron Darling - Mets
Gary Ward - Rangers
Ryne Sandberg - Cubs

I think we may have seen this exact set of cards in a previous break. It sure feels like it, anyway. The upside and downside (at the same time) to this particular set is that there are a limted number of cards in the set and I have a ton of packs of them. So, like it or not, we'll be seeing a lot of duplication. I just hope it works out for everyone.

Each day of the regular baseball season, I am busting open a pack of baseball cards.  These are packs that I have laying around and/or that I have purchased recently on a whim.  I list the cards in the pack and scan in some of them.  I shoot for 9 cards, but sometimes I may scan more, other times fewer.  It all depends on how things hit me in that particular pack.  Oh yes, there will be duplication.  I have a TON of packs from certain brands/years.  I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

For those keeping score, I know there are not actually 182 GAMEDAYS in the 2012 season.  I am counting ALL the days between Opening Day and the last day of the regular season.  Frankly, it's easier that way.  Thanks for playing along.

Also, you are welcome to claim teams/players (Max 3 total). Rules are at the following:

182 Packs of Baseball - 086 - It's a matter of 3s

Myeah, see, we're on eighty-six, see? Myeah. Myeah.

Kudos if you mentally pictured some 30's gangster as you read that.  Zeroes if you have no idea what I'm talking about.  haha, just kidding.

Let's see what pack of cards we can "86" today: How about 2008 Topps Value Pack (30 cards) with '07 Highlight Autographs and '07 World Series Champion Autograph Relics!!  Yeah, don't hold your breath. This was from a repack. I'd be surprised if the pack hadn't already been pilfered through.  For the record, it seems to be factory sealed.

Jeremy Guthrie - Orioles
Christian Guzman - Nationals
David Murphy - Rangers
Magglio Ordonez - Tigers
Matt Garza - Twins
Mike Lamb - Astros
Joe Nathan - Twins
Paul Byrd - Indians - WAHOO!!
Hank Blalock - Rangers
James Loney - Dodgers
Ryan Garko - Indians - WAHOO times two!!
Paul Lo Duca - Mets - Year in Review
Ian Snell - Pirates
Aubrey Huff - Orioles
Adam Loewen - Orioles
Brandon McCarthy - Rangers
Cole Hamels - Phillies
Clint Hurdle - Rockies
Ryan Braun - Brewers - NL Rookie of the Year
Ryan Church - Nationals
Mark Buehrle - White Sox
Daric Barton - A's
Chad Billingsley - Dodgers
Eugenio Velez - Giants
Mickey Mantle - Yankees (MMS 51)
Brandon Webb - Arizona Diamondbacks - Own the Game
Checklist 3 of 3
Wladimir Balentien - Mariners
Jamey Carroll - Rockies
Cliff Lee - Indians - WAHOO!! A triple!
Sam Fuld - Cubs

Wow! Lots of cards there. well, actually, lots of teams with three cards.  Luckily for Tribe fans, the Indians were one of those teams! Hope some of these will help your collections.

Another Dimwit break in the wall...

I love the Daily Dimwit's monthly breaks. I wish I could participate more often, but my bank account frowns upon persons having minus signs in their balances. Dang it.

Well, I was able to participate in one recently, though! I believe it was the May break. I bought the Indians spot and was randomly assigned the Royals. And, man, did that work out for me!

The first card is a 2007 UD Legendary Cuts Legendary Americana card of Frank Lloyd Wright. When we visited Pittsburgh, I had planned to take the kids to "Falling Water." Unfortunately, I failed to check the web site until the day we were going: the site is closed for renovation. Figures.  Also in the break were cards that I am sure I have never seen: Topps Unique. Holy smokes! These are fantastic. You can't tell in the scan, but the name and surrounding border is done in a shiny black while the rest of card's background is a matte finish. Oh, these are great cards.  The player photos are also shiny with matte backgrounds. I dare say "art."  My favorites, though, are the Vintage. Those 80 throwbacks are SUH-WEET! Well, mostly. I am not a fan of they way the dorked the font on the team name. Aside from that, I love 'em!

I am also a fan of Gypsy Queen.  Though I am a die-hard Tribecards collector, the 1977 George Brett cloth sticker is by far my favorite in the lot. The kid in me wants to peel that puppy and stick it on something!  The other Royals aren't too shabby either - how about that Future Stars Hosmer? I am liking the blue on that one.

Awesome cards, Samuel!  Thanks for the opportunity to play!

192 Packs of baseball - 085 - Ozzie sings opera?

I love to read articles about the "death of the hobby." Why? Because, those article are generally written by clueless yahoos. Sure, card collecting has changed over the century-and-a-quarter that it's been around, but wouldn't one expect things to change during the course of 130+ years!? Besides, in order for there to be a death of ANY hobby, that means no one does it anymore. Sorry to burst your bubble there, crack reports, but there are still many, many folks who enjoy the thrill of holding a piece of cardboard in their hands featuring players they know and love or they will never remember.  That *is* the heart of the hobby. For the most part, it always has been.

Now, let's bust some wax: 2006 Topps Series 2

Brad Asmus - Astros
Yadier Molina - Cardinals
Ozzie Guillen - White Sox

Jason LaRue - Reds
Roberto Hernandez - Pirates
Dustin McGowan - Blue Jays

I'm "old school." I like these cards because the backs feature stats over the course of the players' careers. I am not a numbers guy, but I enjoy seeing how a player has risen, or fallen, over his MLB history.

Cards (and buttons) from Rod!

I received word from Rod that he had sent me some cards and pins while I was away galavanting halfway across the United States and back.  He was not lying!

I received an excellent collection of the Wordstock.org pins that I have come to love so much:

I believe I now have one pin for every bobblehead figure I own! Wahoo!  Oh, sure, that makes no sense to most folks. But, I laid out the other pins I have in front of my bobbleheads during my "spring cleaning" a while back.  Now, I can lay one pin in front of each bobblehead - like giving each one its own quote. Okay, so that sounds way more fun and interesting in my own head. I should probably keep those things to myself, but then where is the fun in that?

I received a very nice collection of 2012 Topps and Opening Day cards:

I'm blowing the next picture up because it is chock full of Triber goodness. From Golden Moments to various Minis, Shiny cards to sparkly ones, how the hits just keep coming!

But, wait! There's more Indians goodness coming your way!  How about Gypsy Queen, Obak, and even an autograph in the mix! Not your regular, blaise' on-sticker kind, either. No way, folks! We are talking genuine Sharpie to the Cardboard here.  That is way cool!

There were a few other cards that I forgot to scan, and a slew of doubles in the mix.  This was a most gracious welcome home!  THANK YOU very much, Rod!  Keep on reading!

182 Packs of Baseball - 084 - A revelation of sorts

Hello, everyone! Welcome to another summer day of bustin' our wax.  Today's pack features cards from 1998.  We've seen plenty of these packs so far, and we will see more in the future. Know what they are yet? Sure you do... EVEN a casual reader can spot this CLUB, no matter in which STADIUM they prefer to watch their team.

That's right - 1998 Topps Stadium Club Hobby Evens

Hideki Trabu - Yankees
Dave Hollins - Angels
Lance Johnson - Cubs

Garret Anderson - Angels
Matt Stairs - A's
Tim Belcher - Royals
Danny Neagle - Braves
Pedro Martinez - Red Sox - Transactions
Chuck Knoblauch - Yankees - Transaction
Checklist 1 of 2

I have never heard of Trabu, but that doesn't really mean anything - as you well know if you read along much at all. I love collecting Indians cards, but my specific knowledge of players is about as weak as they come.  I like the Transactions cards. Hey! I just now noticed that the "old" team logo is lightly printed at the top of each card on the front. Yeah, I really am that slow sometimes.

Walking off a leader

As many of you know, I am a huge Jim Thome fan.  The other day, as my family was making our way back across the United States after our vacation in da 'Burgh, Thome knocked in an all-time leading 14th walk-off homer!  To boot, Papelbon had put a $5000 bounty on a walk-off for the game as an incentive to get his teammates going.  Thome answered the call!  He now leads the majors in walk-off homers. Way to go, Mr. Thome!

The photo comes from my trip to The Jake during a (thankfully) brief afternoon thundershower.

182 Packs of Baseball - 083 - Been Here Before?

We are rolling through the season, and are rapidly approaching the halfway mark.  We still have June to finish out before we get there, though.  Wow, it's been just over two months of baseball, folks.  We stil have lots of ball and a lot of packs ahead of us!

Today, I've got a pack of 1986 Donruss Ml All-Stars.

Hank Aaron Puzzle - 25, 26, 27
Darryl Strawberry - Mets - Pop-up

Dave Winfield - Yankees
Pete Rose - Reds
Jim Rice - Red Sox

Now, THAT is why I love these packs. We get players from the 80's that many of us grew up watching, and that many of my readers are too young to have seen play.  We have some of the best players of the era right here. I love it!

182 Packs of Baseball - A peek behind the curtain

I've had a couple readers ask me, "What does the box look like?"  That is, the box from which I have been pulling packs for the 182 Packs project.

Well, today you get a look inside the box.  Remember, we've done nearly half the season, so it is not as full as it was when we started.  But, looking down into it should get some collector's mouths salivating. Well, maybe not THAT...

I am using a plastic storage bin to hold all the cards.  Each post, I reach into the bin and pull out whatever my hand grabs.  I don't look into when I am pulling a pack, either.  That's why we end up with back-to-pack packs sometimes.  Every so often, I reach in and toss the packs around like a salad, just to mix them up even more.  What you see is the latest mixing job - done right before my last post.

I appreciate everyone who is following along - either as a participant or as a spectator.  Thanks for taking the time to take a peek.

182 Packs of Baseball - 082 - Insert Phenom Here

Hey everyone! We are back from our vacation, which explains why this post appears "late" compared to my other ones.  We had a great time at the Indians and Pirates games while we were away.  "We" would be me and my family, just in case you thought I was referring to myself in the plural.

Well, let's get to busting some wax: 2010 Topps Baseball Update Series

Aaron Heilman - Diamondbacks
Jeanmar Gomez - Indians - WAHOO! Now, that is how to come back from vaca!
Blake DeWitt - Cubs
Rich Harden - Rangers

John Lackey - Red Sox
Carlos Silva - Cubs
Omar Infante - Braves
Kevin Russo - Yankees
Josh Donaldson - A's
Stephen Strasburg - Nationals - Peak Performance
Stephen Strasburg - Nationals - More Tales of the Game - Rookie Tsunami
Roy Halladay - Phillies - Topps Attax

Well, score one for the Tribe! Since 2010 was the year of the phenom, we have two Strasburg inserts thrown in for good measure.  Not a bad mix of cards at all.

182 Packs of Baseball - 081 - Home Again, Home Again

If everything has gone according to plan, we should be pulling up in our drive any minute. Well, maybe not quite any minute. But, close.  This marks the official end of our vacation. I am celebrating, per se, by opening another pack of 2008 UD Artifacts A Piece of History Baseball like we did yesterday.

Joe Blanton - A's
Scott Rolen - Blue Jays

Historical Moments - Creation of the Internet
Yankee Stadium Legacy - George Pipgras - Game 412
Historical Moments - Civil Rights Act

Wow. Two Historical (read, non-baseball) cards in one pack. Well, the Creation of the Internet surely falls under the "fun, weird, etc" category.  That is a shining light.

182 Packs of Baseball - 080 - Have a Piece

Alas, today marks the end of our annual family vacation.  We are heading back home.  I'll be posting several things regarding the trip after we're back home.  In the meantime, enjoy a pack of 2008 Upper Deck Artifacts A Piece of History:

Vladimir Guerrero - Angels
Ryan Howard - Phillies
USSR Crumbles - Historical Moments

Babe Ruth - Yankees - Yankee Stadium Legacy - Game 238
Joe Mauer - Twins

I have yet to understand the concet of putting non-baseball cards in a baseball set. Seriously. Whatever. At least we had decent players to gawk at!

182 Packs of Baseball - 079 - A Rare Score

Welcome to Friday!!  Tonight, my family and I (and by "family," I mean FAMILY - Aunts and Uncles included!!) are going to watch the Pirates play some ball.  I haven't seen a live Pirates game since I was a kid and they played in Three Rivers Stadium.  I'm pretty sure we had serious nosebleed seats.  That won't be the case for today. I scored nice tickets quite some time ago.  I'll post pics later.

While I am getting ready for that, I leave you with a pack of 2008 Upper Deck Series 2 to ponder:

Aaron Harang - Reds
Javier Vazquel - White Sox
Sean Marshall - Cubs
Jayson Nix - Rockies
Ryan Zimmerman - Nationals

Skip Schumaker - Cardinals
Francisco Liriano - Twins
Pedro Martinez - Mets
Cliff Floyd - Rays
Emil Brown - A's
Jason Jennings - Rangers
Erik Bedard - Mariners
Chris Denorfia - A's
Matt Tupman - Royals
Aaron Harang - Reds - Checklist
Jake Peavy - Padres
Alex Romero - Diamondbacks
Vladimir Guerrero - Angels - Starquest Rare

Nice score on the Vlad! This pack had a decent mix of players and a couple teams we haven't had a chance to much from as well.

182 Packs of Baseball - 078 - Break out the Tomahawks

Pop some popcorn, grab a Coke, and... What? It's only 5:30 in the morning?  Oh. Well, grab a donut and some coffee.  We're busting wax over here.

Today, we're opening a pack of 1996 Leaf Hobby.

Dante Bichette - Rockies
Tom Glavine - Braves
Michael Tucker - Royals
Steve Avery - Braves
Andy Ashby - Padres

Mickey Tettleton - Rangers
Robin Ventura - White Sox
Ryan Klesko - Braves
Alex Rodriguez - Mariners
Steve Finley - Padres
Cecil Fielder - Tigers

Wow. Cap'n Canuck hit the Braves jackpot here!  And, I believe we've seen some of these cards a time or two already, so that should mean doubles to go around. In the meantime, we've got Glavine, Ventura, and A-Rod goin on here. Nice pack!

182 Packs of Baseball - 077 - Feelin O-Pee-Chee

Hey, everyone!  Hope things are going well. I should be at the halfway point in my family vacation about now, if things are going as planned.  Since I am posting these ahead of time, I can only imagine...

What do we have today?  How about some 2009 O-Pee-Chee?  Okay, sounds good.

Phil Hughes - Yankees
Luis Castillo - Mets
Chris Perez - Cardinals

Michael Young - Rangers - Midsummer Memories
Ichiro - Mariners - Black Border?
Colby Rasmus - Cardinals - Rookie

The Midsummer Memories card has a strange appeal to it. Like a weird version of 70's Topps.  The Ichiro is the only card with a black border in the pack, so I assume it means something? As usual, I'll let you tell me!

My trip to The Jake

Monday, my family and I loaded up and headed to Cleveland from Pittsburgh. We spent the day checking out a couple things before heading to the Indians game. Just as we approached, the bottom fell out of a threatening sky.

It rained for a while, and since we weren't sure at that point if there would be a game, we snapped some pics. We happened to park on the centerfield side of the park near Gate C. So, we got in, each of us snagging a cool Cabrera bobblehead, and headed to Heritage Park.

Heritage Park is amazing in the rain, so I bet it is even sweeter when one is not being showered by an evening rain. The rain wasn't heavy, but it was constant. I love the Bob Feller wall. My favorite spot, of course, is the future home of the Thome statue.

We took Emily to KidZone where she made a foam visor with lots of decorations and I played a very fun card game with some of the zone staff. The cards are round with various pictures, logos, etc. each player gets a card. The center pile gets one card flipped over. Players look for a match on their card and the center card. Yell out your match first and you win the card. The player with the most cards at the end wins. My daughter climbed the rock wall after her crafting was done. To 4 year old, the wall must seem huge. To my daughter (not quit a teen), it was almost too small to enjoy. But, she did enjoy it anyway. We also managed to get in a fast-moving photo line and took our pic with Aaron Cunningham. He is a very nice guy.

The whole time, I had been talking and texting with Jack (known as Baseball Dad in the blogosphere). After the game was underway, we finally met near the bleachers. That was cool! We chatted a bit. I have saving wrappers from the breaks to give him but with the rain, I left them in the car. Turns out I will be mailing them after all. Haha, figures.

The game itself was great - a sweet battle back and forth between the two Ohio teams. Even sweeter: the Indians won, putting the horrid playing in Pittsburgh behind them.

I took lots of pictures that will get posted after we get back from our trip. In the meantime, here are some from my iPhone (I am using the Blogger app to post while on the road).

182 Packs of Baseball - 076 - East Meets Aura

Puttering right along, we've menaged to reach day 76 in our season-long adventure of opening at least one pack of baseball cards for each day.  We are moving closer and closer to the halfway point, but we still have a bit of road ahead before we reach that mile marker.

In the meantime, let's rip open some 1997 Pinnacle Hobby New:

Chris Snopek - White Sox
Travis Fryman - Tigers
Gary Sheffield - Marlins - East Meets West
Cal Ripken Jr - Orioles
Robb Nen - Marlins

Henry Rodriguez - Expos
Juan Gonzalez - Rangers - AURA
Andy Benes - Cardinals
Tim Naehring - Red Sox
Roberto Hernandez - White Sox

Hey, we pulled another "East Meets West" *and* an Aura card!  This pack was nice enough to throw a Ripken our way, too.  That makes back-to-back Ripken packs!  No Indians, but hopefully that will change in packs to come.

182 Packs of Baseball - 075 - Goin to see the Tribe!

Well, the day has arrived!  Today, I am heading out to see my first Indians game in Cleveland.  I feel like a kid going to Disney World! Wait, I've been to Disney World. Well, okay, maybe a kid on Christmas or something. Any way you look at it, I am jazzed up and ready to go!  There is even a chance that I'll meet up with Baseball Dad somewhere along the route!  How cool would that be!?  I actually have a little something to give him. Sure, postage is cheaper, but not near as much fun!

Looks like we are going old school today - we've got a pack of 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars

Hank Aaron Puzzle - 10, 11, 12
Rickey Henderson - Yankees

Terry Kennedy - Padres
Cal Ripken Jr - Orioles
Steve Garvey - Padres

Well, jumpin' Jehosaphat! Henderson, Ripken and Garvey in the same pack! Now, THAT is the way to kick-start the day! Oh, sorry. I'm getting carried away with my exclamation points again.

182 Packs of Baseball - 074 - All the Kings men

Hey, folks! Thanks for dropping in to see what today's pack of cards brings us.  Since this is Sunday, and it is Father's Day, I want to wish all the fathers out there a very Happy Father's Day!!  I'll be spending the day with my family and my extended family in the suburbs of Pittsburgh!  I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun and playing a LOT of catch-up!

So, to ring in this Father's Day, we have a pack of 2006 Fleer Ultra!

Hideki Matsui - Yankees - RBI Kings
Moises Alou - Giants
Zach Duke - Pirates
Mark Teixeira - Rangers - Retro Lucky 13

Felipe Lopez - Reds
Alfonso Soriano - Rangers - Midsummer Classic Kings
Brady Clark - Brewers (Gold?)
Miguel Cabrera - Marlins

The "KINGS" cards are VERY cool-looking.  I think Fleer did a good job with those ones. Oh, wait. That would be Upper Deck dba Fleer.  The Clark card has a full gold/broze background, where the other cards have full-color ones.  There is no designation as to it being a "gold" card though. Usually, Fleer would have "Gold Medallion" or something. Ah well.

182 Packs of Baseball - 073 - Three Rivers Trio

Welcome to Day 2 of my vacation.  Don't worry, I don't plan to start out all the posts this way.  That would be ridiculous - tomorrow wouldn't be Day 2. (rimshot, anyone?)

Let's see, what are going to open up today?  How about a pack of 1988 Score.  1988 Score!? I didn't even know I had this in there.  Wow, this should be interesting. Let's see what we've got!

RJ Reynolds - Pirates
Jim Presley - Mariners
Candy Maldonado - Giants
Terry Kennedy - Orioles
Bobby Meacham - Yankees
Mike Diaz - Pirates
Great Moments - September 29, 1954 - Trivia Card
Bob Stanley - Red Sox
Mike Morgan - Mariners
Mickey Hatcher - Dodgers
Ken Dixon - Orioles
Don Carman - Phillies
Junior Ortiz - Pirates
Frank Tanana - Tigers
Gary Roenicke - Braves
Tony Armas - Angels
Rick Manning - Brewers
Ivan Calderon - White Sox

Wow, this one is certainly laden with Pirates as I am (er, should be) heading into the Three Rivers city today.  Looking at this list, which names stick out to you?  For me, it's Maldonado (because of his name), Hatcher, Armas, and Manning.  I have always been a Rick Manning fan, even after his Tribe days.

The Tribe in Chicago

A little while back, I went to Chicago with a colleague.  While we were there, I grabbed a couple tickets to a White Sox game.  Turned out, the Indians were playing! Wahoo!  At the time, the big news was that a certain player had just joined the Indians - Johnny Damon.  Admittedly, his first outing was not a good one. But, the Indians won in the end.  We also witnessed what seemed to be a Jack Hannahan family reunion. That was very cool. My camera did not capture a certain moment as I had hoped, but several Asian fans were snapping pictures of Choo like nobody's business.  It was endearing to watch it all unfold before us. The best part was taking in the cool evening at the ballpark. I love going to baseball games.  Here are some pics from that game (For whatever WACKO reason, the sideways photos will not upload vertically!! Whatever):
