182 Packs of Baseball - 026

It's the last day of April, marking the end of the month when the season first began.  No, not a month of baseball, of course.  Rather, it is just the end of month in which our favorite pasttime took its official 2012 start.  Today, we mark this event with a pack of 1996 Leaf Hobby.  Let us embark together:

Denny Neagle - Pirates
Joe Carter - Blue Jays
Kenny Lofton - Indians - WAHOO! Triber time!

Brian Jordan - Cardinals
Terrell Wade - Braves
Ray Durham - White Sox
Brad Asmus - Padres
Marquis Grissom - Braves
Eric Young - Rockies

Moises Alou - Expos
Ozzie Guillen - White Sox
John Smoltz - Braves

Hey, not a bad group of players.  I sure can't complain about pulling a Triber from the pack!  I am almost certain I have this one, so it will most likely find its way to the next Tribe collector in line.

Each day of the regular baseball season, I am busting open a pack of baseball cards.  These are packs that I have laying around and/or that I have purchased recently on a whim.  I list the cards in the pack and scan in some of them.  I shoot for 9 cards, but sometimes I may scan more, other times fewer.  It all depends on how things hit me in that particular pack.  Oh yes, there will be duplication.  I have a TON of packs from certain brands/years.  I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

For those keeping score, I know there are not actually 182 GAMEDAYS in the 2012 season.  I am counting ALL the days between Opening Day and the last day of the regular season.  Frankly, it's easier that way.  Thanks for playing along.

Also, you are welcome to claim teams/players (Max 3 total). Rules are at the following:

182 Packs of Baseball - 025

Today's pack o' the day comes from a repack box I bought specifically for the pack-a-day breaks.  I realized I had lots of 90's packs but not too much in the way of 2000's so I took care of that!

Right now, I am opening up a pack of 2008 Topps Series 1 cards.

Josh Barfield - Indians - WAHOO! Man, lead-off card is an Indians player! Sweet!
Shawn Green - Mets
AL Leaders - Borowski (Indians!), Jenks (White Sox), Putz (Mariners) - Hmm, okay, I'll need a rule for multi-team cards I see.  I'll figure it out after the season's over and the pack bustin' is done.
CJ Wilson - Rangers
Chin-Lung Hu - Dodgers

Ross Gload - Royals
Joba Chamberlain - Yankees - Dick Perez
David Wright - Mets - Work Hard, Get Cards
Wes Helms - Phillies
Eric Wedge - Indians - WHAT!? Oh yeah! TWO Tribers in one pack! Nice!
Gavin Floyd - White Sox

Awesome! I should have been Tribe-or-no-Tribe along with the breaks.  haha, sure, I can say that right now. How long did it take me to get here, though? I'd be way behind.

182 Packs of Baseball - 024

Twenty-four days of baseball.  That is basically 13% of the season already in the past.  That also means we have a LOT more baseball ahead of us!  Let's get crackin'.

Today, we've got 1991 Studio featuring Rod Carew puzzle pieces.  Let's rock!

Rod Carew Puzzle - Twins - 61, 62, 63
Nolan Ryan - Rangers
Curt Schilling - Astros
John Smiley - Pirates
Jeff Treadway - Braves
Tim Wallach - Expos

Ed Whitson - Padres
Wally Joyner - Angels
Gary Sheffield - Brewers
Jeff Kunkel - Rangers
Eric King - Indians - WAHOO! Triber! Sweet!  Wait, is that back-to-back Triber packs!? Yes. Yes it is!
Don Mattingly - Yankees

Holy smokes!  Man, if this had been 1991, I would have been spazzin' out over this pack. Heck, I'm nearly geeking out over it now!  Sweet!  I'm just gonna say this: Remember the rules of distribution. I'm sure we'll see more of these.  Well, I hope, anyway!

182 Packs of Baseball - 023

Thanks for reading and/or playing along during this journey through an entire baseball season's worth of pack busting!  I appreciate everyone's comments, insights, and thoughts.

Today, the magic box of packs gives forth a pack of 1986 Donruss Major League All-Stars oversized cards, pop-up and Hank Aaron puzzle pieces.

Hank Aaron Puzzle - Braves - 25, 26, 27
Steve Garvey - Padres
Willie Hernandez - Tigers
Jose Cruz - Astros
Bert Blyleven - Indians - WAHOO!! A Triber!  And, I need this one! But, the next ones of these (should there be any) goes into the pool for Tribe collectors.

182 Packs of Baseball - 022

Okay, folks, step right up!  Today's pack comes to us from 2007, back when Upper Deck could legally produce MLB-authorized baseball cards.  Remember those days?  No?  Well, I do.

At any rate, we're looking at 2007 Upper Deck UD Masterpieces today!

Bucky Dent - Yankees
Miguel Cabrera - Marlins
Albert Pujols - Cardinals
Roy Campanella - Dodgers

Wow, that's it... Four cards per pack, eh? Glad I did not pay full retail for those puppies!  The cards themselves are great - it's the cost-per that gets me.

Twenty-one days... Three solid weeks of America's Pasttime and bustin' the wax to go with it!  Today's pack ripping comes to you thanks to the 1997 NEW Pinnacle Hobby set.  Ten cards in a pack. Let's see what we've got here today:

Barry Bonds - Giants - East Meets West (with A-Rod pictured, too, I believe) - I don't think I have EVER seen this kind of card from this set.  Very cool!
Juan Guzman - Blue Jays
Brian Hunter - Tigers
Kevin Elster - Pirates

Deion Sanders - Reds
Jermaine Dye - Royals
Dmitri Young - Cardinals - Rookie

Sammy Sosa - Cubs - Cool broken bat photo
Tino Martinez - Yankees
Chuck Finley - Angels

Man, I have to say, I sure do like the design of these cards. No borders, Cool foil effects, crisp photos.

April 24 - Double Header, 182 Packs of Baseball

I've decided that from time to time, I am going to have some days that I'll call "Double Header" days.  On these days, I'll bust open an extra pack of cards, just for the heck of it - Something fun to do in celebration of the greatest game in America.  Today is one of those days.

Today's Double Header pack is actually a 3-pack: 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen Wal-Mart edition.  I have no idea if there are other varieties, but I bought these at Wal-Mart and in case there are others, I thought it safe (fair, perhaps) to say so.

The 3-pack comes with three framed inserts in addition to the packs themselves.  In the name of honesty and disclosure, I will let you know that I have seen all of these before posting them.  This is unlike any of the daily breaks I've done so far.  I just couldn't help myself.  And, after you see them, you'll understand - just from a purely collector's viewpoint.  I have not read anything about what other folks think of the designs or the cards or the players portrayed.  All I know is that I think these are wonderful little bits of cardboard.  Let's get crackin:

Nelson Cruz - Rangers - Framed Insert
Dustin Pedroia - Red Sox - Framed Insert
Andre Dawson - Cubs - Framed Insert

Bob Gibson - Cardinals
Ty Cobb - Tigers
Johnny Bench - Reds

Jose Reyes - Marlins - Sliding Stars
Brian McCann - Braves - Mini
Josh Hamilton - Rangers - Glove Stories

Alex Rodriguez - Yankees
Jose Reyes - Marlins
David Freese - Cardinals

Elvis Andrus - Rangers - Sliding Stars
Mike Carp - Mariners - Mini
Stan Musial - Cardinals - Hallmark Heroes

Dustin Ackley - Mariners
Neil Walker - Pirates
Delmon Young - Tigers

Scott Baker - Twins
CC Sabathia - Yankees - Mini "Straight Cut"
Desmond Jennings - Rays - Future Stars

As a long-time fan and collector, I love this set.  It is throwback without being stupid about it.  It's got a great mix of past heroes and today's stars, along with a few names I'm not familiar with at all.  For me, that's a perfect blend.  I'm glad to know these guys will find welcome homes after the season!

Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you Day 19 of the 2012 regular baseball season.  Today's pack of cards comes from the 1996 Leaf Hobby Set. I think I need to find some Regular Set issues so I can see what the difference is between Hobby and Regular.  I can tell, these hobby cards sure are shiny!

Sammy Sosa - Cubs
Billy Ashley - Dodgers
Jeff Conin - Marlins
Travis Fryman - Tigers
Bret Boone - Reds
Chris Snopek - White Sox

Hal Morris - Reds

Heading to the Big Show!

Every year, our family takes a road trip for vacation.  For the past several years, we have tried very hard to incorporate a Major League Baseball game into that trip.  This year is no different.  Actually, this year will be a LOT different!

You see, this year, we are going to see TWO baseball games at two different parks.  That's not even the best part.  The best part?  I will finally get to see the Cleveland Indians play at The Jake! Wahoo! (Yeah, yeah, to me it will ALWAYS be The Jake.)

Most of my side of the family lives in/near Pittsburgh, so this year our vacation will take us back to my hometown.  When we go, we will catch a game in Cleveland at the beginning of the week and then a Pirates game near the end of the week! Wahoo!  I have never looked forward to June so much - not even when I was a kid waiting for the first day of summer break!

The great thing about seeing the Pirates play? Some of my extended family will be joining us!  I can't even remember the last time I saw a ballgame with my Mom's brother and and sister.  Heck, I'm not even sure we ever did, though I think we did.  Probably back in '77 or '78 maybe?

This is the #5 thing on my Bucket List, and since two of those have already been crossed off, seeing the Indians play *IN* Cleveland is actually #3 on my of things still to do! Wahoo!!  I.AM.EXCITED!

182 Packs of Baseball - 018

Okay, I did it.  I went to the local Fred's and picked up some repack loveliness for the season breaks.  To start things off, I'm going with a pack of 2007 Fleer Ultra!

Hanley Ramirez - Marlins
Tim Hudson - Braves
David Wright - Mets

Jack Wilson - Pirates
Jared Burton - Reds (Ultra Rookies)

Not a bad mix from '07.  The Burton card is pretty cool.

182 Packs of Baseball - 017

Today's pack is a 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars.  We've seen a few of these already.  I need to grab some stuff from the 2000's.  Those will come up during the season. Don't you worry!

In the meantime, let's take a trip back in time to see what players we've got:

Hank Aaron Puzzle - Braves - 4, 5, 6
George Brett - Royals - Pop-up - Awesome!
Jay Howell - A's

Goose Gossage - Padres - Blurry action shot, but who cares - it's GOOSE!
Jack Morris - Tigers

Wow, nice pack of cards here!  Congrats to those adding to your collection from this pack!

A slight rain delay in the 182 Packs of Baseball

4/20 UPDATE: I mistakenly had Kary listed as Dodgers. She actually asked for Brewers. The list has been adjusted!

4/19 UPDATE NOTE:  Remember, folks can respond to *ANY* post with a request (I get emails when someone does), so they may not appear on *this* page.  No, actually, I have an idea.  I will post the most up-to-date TEAM list here. Players, weird cards, etc will not be updated here, but you can see those on the "Registered" page above.  So, at the BOTTOM of this post, you will find up-to-date team requests/participants.  Thanks for playing along!

The response for trades/cards opened during the 182 Packs of Baseball has quickly reached a point where I need to come up with some kind of system.  So, here's my plan:

I get all singles and first doubles of Indians cards/players.  The rest are up for grabs.

Captain Canuck gets any single of any Braves that I pull, if he wants them. Doubles will moved into another pile (to be explained in a moment).  It's the reward for responding first. :-)

The Lincecum and Kershaw inserts from Day 001 go to Adam. He asked first. That's how I roll.

All singles of Mark Grace and Stadium Clubs (1993 and up) will go to Andy (unless they are Braves, then Andy gets single cards of any doubles).  Doubles will be moved into another pile (again, explained in a moment).  He asked first.

All singles of Tony Gwynn, Kerry Wood (unless in an Indians uni), and Frank Thomas will go to Jon if Jon says he wants them. If not, then they will go into the "other" pile(s).

Now, on to "the other" piles.  Pick players or teams. Don't get greedy.  I say a limit of THREE TOTAL is more than fair.  That is any combination of teams/players up to THREE TOTAL.  (Ex: Mets, Dodgers, Mark McGwire.  Or, Sammy Sosa, Albert Pujols, Pirates. You get the gist).  And, your request can also be for things like "players signing autographs" or whatever.  I will have to individually evaluate any of those kinds of requests, though. Sorry, but a lot of times, I can't tell if a photo is a night game or not, so "Night Games" probably won't be an option.  Well, I suppose it could be if it is blatantly obvious that it's a night game.  Haha, and if you're thinking of something like, "All cards with BLUE on them," uh, no.

I am giving these away at the end of the regular season.  You can send me Indians cards as trades if you want, or you can send a little money to cover postage if you want, or you can say, "Wow! Thanks for the cards," if you want.  Those of you that have followed along with me over the years know that is exactly how I operate.  I expect nothing in return, but I never pass up a gift of Tribecards!

Your request will be lined out in the order I receive it. So, if I get two requests for Yankees cards, the first person gets dibs on all singles and first doubles.  The second person gets dibs on singles from the remaining doubles, and so forth.  Basically, no one should end up with doubles.  Of course, if someone requested a certain player from the Yankees BEFORE the Yankees team request, the player-person would get the first copy of that player.  This sounds way more complicated than it is.

All unclaimed teams/players/cards will go into some big pot to be given away during the World Series.

Oh, and the LAST DAY to sign up for free cards is the last day of the regular season.  So, theoretically, you could wait until the end to decide which player(s) and/or team(s) you'd like. I wouldn't do that.  First, you risk the chance of losing out on cards you want. Second, it is way more fun to watch your collection build before your eyes each day. :-)

So, respond to this post (or any of the 182 Days posts, really).  First come, first served.  I maintain the right to limit folks/reject requests if I need to.  My goal is to spread the joy of collecting cardboard.  Everybody into the pool!

PS - Once you're on "the list," please send me your username (that you responded with) and your mailing address.  My database is woefully out of date, so I need everyone's address that wants to play along. Thanks!

We now return you to the 182 Packs of Baseball program... Er, well, almost:

182 Packs of Baseball - 016

The 16th Day of the regular MLB season happens to fall on my BIRTHDAY! Wahoo!! It's hard to believe that I turn the big Four-Three this year.  Forty-three... Man, where does the time go?  I remember flipping and trading card with my buddies, then gluing our cards to spiral notebook pages like it was yesterday.  I remember dropping a couple bucks on a a handful of packs, tossing the "junk" cards into the trash outside the dairy store where we bought them.

For today's pack, I am busting open a pack of 1991 Studio.

Rod Carew Puzzle - Twins - 43, 44, 45
Kurt Stillwell - Royals
David Segui - Orioles
Greg Vaughn - Brewers
Jeff Reardon - Red Sox

Don Salught - Pirates
Hal Morris - Reds
Lee Smith - Cardinals
Pete Harnisch - Astros
Phil Planter - Red Sox
Jose Lind - Pirates

Tribecards wRappers in 1st Place!

I thought I had better post this now before the season slips away from my fantasy league team:

I don't think I have EVER been in first place before in any fantasy league! Wahoo!!  Don't get me wrong: I have no illusions of this lasting too long. In the meantime, though, I am enjoying the fire out of it!!  WAHOO!!  Way to go boys!

182 Packs of Baseball - 015

Now, you may recall that I have stated several times during the course of these breaks that I have TONS of packs from the same year/brand.  You are going to see the same year/brand opened over and over again during the regular baseball season.  It is akin to following every single game of your favorite team: You would see the same players over and over.

Now, the advantage to pack-busting is that we will most likely *not* see the same thing over and over, right?  I mean, after all, people are trying to enhance their collections here!

With all that said, I reached into my magic bag (er, okay, it's a large storage box) and pulled out: 1998 Stadium Club Hobby!  Wait, I just realized the pack says these are "The EVENS."  What the heck does that mean?  Welp, I guess we'll find out.

Brad Rigby - A's (Card 152)
John Jaha - Brewers (Card 142)
Delino DeShields - Cardinals (Card 48, I'm sensing a pattern here)

Keith Foulke - White Sox (Card 270)
AJ Hinch - A's (Bowman Prospect Preview, Card BP9)
Raul Casanova - Tigers (Card 70)

Paul O'Neill - Yankees (Card 104)
Dennis Eckersley - Red Sox (TRANSACTIONS, Card 362)
Bobby Estalella - Phillies (Prime Rookies, Card 350)
Checklist 2 of 2

Evidently, "EVENS" means all the cards are even-numbered, except for the insert.  Guess I'll have to see if I have any of the "ODDS" variety.  What a weird way to distribute cards.

I've added a "page" to the top section of the Tribecards blog that takes you to the Google Doc that I use to keep track of everyone for the break.  They are listed in order in which folks have signed up and their choices.

You might want to check it out before requesting your teams/players.  I am working on a better way to let folks know what's still available because sometimes that's easier to help you decide what you'd like to claim.

182 Packs of Baseball - 013

Alright, folks, thanks for stopping by to check out today's pack post!  I'm rolling out the "old school" today with a visit to the 1986 Donruss Major League All-Stars cards.  Remember, these are the ones that have the pop-up and the oversized cards.

Hank Aaron Puzzle - Braves - 22, 23, 24
Carlton Fisk - White Sox - Pop-up
Ozzie Virgil - Phillies

Rich Gedman - Red Sox
Minneapolis Metrodome - Home of the 1985 All-Star Game

Wow, that Metrodome card sure fits "unusual" in my book...

182 Packs of Baseball - 010

For the 10th day of the baseball season, I decided to open up a pack of 1997 Pinnacle Hobby.  Oh, I know what you're thinking; "Man, we've already seen two of these. Come on, dude!"  Well, here's a curveball: These are the 1997 Pinnacle Hobby *NEW* Version.  Yeah, that's right.  Things weren't confusing enough trying to collect Pinnacle in '97 with all their variations, team sets, etc.  They needed TWO versions of their base trading cards - the original and the *NEW* ones.

Let's see what awesomely good newness we end up with here:

Scott Rolen - Rookie - Phillies
Bill Pulsipher - Mets
Terry Steinbach - Twins
Michael Tucker - Braves

Andy Pettitte - Yankees
Gary Sheffield - Marlins
Darin Erstad - Angels
Will Clark - Rangers
Kevin Orie - Rookie - Cubs
Ismael Valdes - Dodgers
