Tribecards from Outer Space: A not-so-free free agent

Hey folks! Thanks for stopping by tonight. I will run the draft on Monday evening, as has become something of the norm with that particular event. I haven't even looked to see how many folks have taken part so far nor what the spread of players seems to be. I don't know why I even bother with the last. Before i run the draft, I like to look over the list of everyone's choices to try to get a feel for things. But, invariably I miss players or neglect to see duplicates until I run the "Find All" draft. Then suddenly, there are 15 of this player or 7 of that one. By the end of the draft, most names are simply singles that no one else but that one manager wanted. Ideally, I think that's how we'd all like it: we each pick our players and we're the only manager to pick those players. I can't see that ever happening. If it does, I'll buy some hobby box of something and share the wealth. haha!

Tonight, I'm opening one of the packs from Mark. This is a 1990 Topps Traded. 7 cards per pack.

Matt Sinatro - Mariners - Free Agent
Bud Harrelson - Mets - Paul Hadsall (Wahoo!!)
Wayne Tolleson - Yankees - Free Agent
Lloyd Moseby - Tigers - Free Agent (but not for long!)
Hubie Brooks - Dodgers - ScottCrawfordOnCards (Wahoo!!)
Daryl Boston - Mets - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)
Tim Layana - Reds - Free Agent

First off, congrats to the managers who snagged players from this pack! Second, Moseby is in the current draft, so there is a good chance someone will walk away with this card this week. Unless no one picked him. Surely not.

Free Agent Draft 06/29/2013 OPEN!

Hey everyone! This week's draft is OPEN!  There ** 70 ** names to choose from this week! Wow, did we open a lot of packs or what!? Or maybe, just big packs. haha!  In any case, here is the draft:

Tribecards from Outer Space: Great Gifts!

Hey everyone! I am still putting this week's draft together. In the mean time, Mark Aubrey sent a 'care package' my way! Inside were a slew of packs for this giveaway and a book centered on the Cleveland Indians! VERY COOL!! Thanks, Mark! These are great! Take a look:

See the little packs there? The ones with the mostly black labels? From the print on the back, these appear to be UK or German or something. They are made by Topps. I am busting on of these open right now!

Lloyd Moseby - Blue Jays - Free Agent
Dave Stewart - A's - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Teddy Higuera - Brewers - Free Agent
Mike Schmidt - Phillies - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)
Robin Yount - Brewers - Patrick Smith (Wahoo!!)

WOW! Thanks again, Mark, for these very cool additions to the giveaway! There are lots more cards from Mark, too, so we'll see those during the season - including a couple more of these UK Topps! I can't wait to dive into the book, too!

The draft will be posted soon!

Tribecards from Outer Space: Thursday Threesome

Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well this evening. I know of a few bloggers out there going through some rough patches - either personally or their spouse/family. I'm praying for you and your spouses. I pray there is healing, peace, patience, and wisdom given to you and your significant others. Some people may wonder why i would do such a thing on my baseball card blog. The way I see it, some of you have become friends over the years that I've been doing this, and I know there's not a lot else I can do for you from here.

Tonight, I am opening three pack of cards. Let's see what we've got.

First up, 2001 Fleer Ultra. 10 cards per pack.

Quilvio Veras - Braves - Free Agent
Todd Helton - Rockies - Workman (Wahoo!!)
Jacque Jones - gcrl (Wahoo!!)
Darin Erstad - Angels - Backtop cards (Wahoo!!)
Eric Byrnes - A's - Von Spalding (Wahoo!!)
Delino DeShields - Orioles - Free Agent
Jim Edmonds - Cardinals - Bo Rosny (Wahoo!!)
Jermaine Dye - Royals - Free Agent
Jeff Sparks/Travis Harper - Rays Prospects - Free Agent/Free Agent
Shannon Stewart - Blue Jays - Free Agent

Kinda surprised that Dye came up a free agent. Man, this week's draft will be full of cool cards and decent players! The DeShields card shows him jumping over Lofton. What a great shot!

Next up, 1984 Donurss Baseball Champions. Duke Snider puzzle and 5 cards.

Duke Snider puzzle 1, 2, 3 - Dodgers - Mark Aubrey (Wahoo!!)
Rogers Hornsby - Reds, I assume - E_Rose (Wahoo!!)
Bert Blyleven - Indians (Wahoo!) - Andr340 (Wahoo!!)
Bill Buckner - Cubs - Free Agent
Ted Williams - Red Sox - Ajpca (Wahoo!!)
Dale Murphy - Braves - Backstop Cards (Wahoo!!)

Holy cow. Dale Murphy looks like a teenager in his card! The other players rock out a very cool pack of cards. Well, okay, maybe not a lot of love for Buckner, eh...

The last pack of the night comes to us from 1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier. 7 cards per pack.

Shawon Dunston - Cubs - Pedersej (Wahoo!!)
Moises Alou - Expos - Cardanathema (Wahoo!!)
Tim Naehring - Red Sox - Free Agent
Fred McGriff - Padres - Backstop Cards (Wahoo!!)

Thanks for playing along!

Tribecards from Outer Space: Two-Fer

Hey, everyone! It is that time again: 2-4-2sday! Tonight, we're opening a pack of 1991 Fleer Ultra and a pack of 2008 UD First Edition. Entire careers came and went between the times these packs first hit store shelves. Let's see if we can find anyone that spans the ages.

First, we'll step back to 1991. There are 14 cards and 1 logo sticker per pack.

Dodgers logo sticker on shiny foil background.
Les Lancaster - Cubs - Free Agent
Cecil Fielder - Tigers - Don Sherman (Wahoo!!)
John Smoltz - Braves - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)
Terry Mulholland - Phillies - Brauer144 (Wahoo!!)
Junior Ortiz - Twins - Free Agent
Bo Jackson Ultra Team Fleer - Royals - Cardanathema (Wahoo!!)
Doug Drabek - Pirates - Free Agent
Denny Neagle - Twins - Free Agent
Ray Lankford - Cardinals - Kerry Biggs (Wahoo!!)
Ron Darling - Mets - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Delino DeShields - Expos - Free Agent
Roberto Kelly - Yankees - ScottCrawfordOnCards (Wahoo!!)
Barry Bonds - Pirates - Sngldddy (Wahoo!!)
Lee Smith - Cardinals - Matthew Wilson (Wahoo!!)

Was '91 the first year for Ultra? They sure look like it. Man, these are nothing compared to the Ultras that would come later. The backs are all kinds of gradient color schemes. I think someone discovered fills in Photoshop at the Fleer design center.

Let's see how we do with the 2008 UD First Edition. 10 cards per pack.

Shaun Marcum - Blue Jays - Thorzul (Wahoo!!)
Matt Kemp - Dodgers - Sngldddy (Wahoo!!)
Todd Jones - Tigers - Free Agent
Josh Wilson - Rays - Free Agent
Roy Oswalt - Astros - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)
Ryan Garko - Indians (Wahoo!) - Free Agent
Jon Garland - White Sox - Free Agent
Rich Thompson - Angels - Free Agent
Jonathan Albaladejo - Nationals - Free Agent
Magglio Ordonez Starquest Common - Tigers - Jafronius (Wahoo!!)
2 x Starquest Promo Cards

Well, no repeat offenders, but we ended up with a few players already claimed and we pulled a Triber! That's always a good pack around here. The fact Garko is a free agent doesn't hurt either.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Hammerin' Away

Now that the draft is over (see previous post) for the week, let's rip a pack of wax. I'm opening a pack of the over-sized 1984 Donruss Baseball Champions. Duke Snider puzzle and 5 cards per pack.

Duke Snider puzzle 16, 17, 18 - Dodgers - Mark Aubrey (Wahoo!!)
Al Oliver - Expos - Free Agent
Gary Carter - Expos - Paul Hadsall (Wahoo!!)
Nolan Ryan - Astros - Prowlingcat (Wahoo!!)
George Brett - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)
Hank Aaron - Braves - Dayf (Wahoo!!)

Dang, man, can you imagine opening this pack in '84!? I mean, I know these are "Champions," but still, what a great pack to bust! Congrats to the managers for snagging some cards for their collections. I know some of these are duplicates, and I am working on a trade/offer set-up so that we can work out deals for specific cards between managers.  I'm just not sure how that will all play out. While I have been a database of which players each manager has, I have not been entering specific card information. So, other than the posts themselves, I don't have an easy way to say who has what.

Any thoughts you have on the subject are greatly appreciated.

Tribecards from Outer Space: The Draft Is In

Happy Monday, folks! Why is it happy? Because it is nearly over AND we have our 06/22/13 draft results. You may be happy to know that there are NO free agents left behind in this recent draft, so we'll take the players added Saturday and Sunday and build a new list from scratch throughout the week.

If you want to see the updated player/manager list, here ya go:

For those interested in how things went down, here are the screenshots:

Initial list before randomization:

The list of managers randomized:

The final results. We had two managers shut out in the first round. Man, that stings. We had 11 total shut out by the end of the 2nd round. And, as you can see, we had two players left by round 3.

It's amazing how things play out after the randomization takes place. It is all about your draft spot, but also about the order in which the players are chosen by the managers.

Let me know what you think about the 20-player draft. Is that the right size? Too many? Not enough? I personally like it. Leave your comments below.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

Hey folks! I don't know how your Sunday afternoon is going, but I just finished helping my Father-in-Law trim limbs from my Mother's trees. It's in the low 90's here in my part of Arkansas, and the humidity is about three clicks shy of "pouring sweat." So, how better to reward myself after doing a bit of yard work? Bust some wax, of course!

I'm kicking it Old School with a few packs today. LOL, well, okay, not really THAT old. We're talking late 80's - early 90's.

So, let's start with 1989 Bowman "Comeback Edition." 12 cards and 1 stick of old, nasty gum per pack.

Orel Hershiser - Dodgers - Mark Aubrey (Wahoo!!)
Ron Hassey - A's - Free Agent
Nick Esasky - Red Sox - Free Agent
Dave Parker - A's - Prowlingcat03 (Wahoo!!)
Carlton Fisk - White Sox - Ajpca (Wahoo!!)
Gregg Jefferies - Mets - Dominicfdny (Wahoo!!)
Richie Ashburn Contest Entry Card - Phillies - Paul Hadsall (Wahoo!!)
John Smoltz - Braves - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)
Jimmy Jones - Yankees - Free Agent
Jamie Moyer - Rangers - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)
Rafael Ramirez - Astros - Free Agent
Mike Birkbeck - Brewers - Free Agent
Dickie Thon - Phillies - Free Agent

We basically split the pack between hits and free agents. Plus, we had a nice variety of hits across the board. Congratulations, guys!

Next, 1990 Fleer 10th Anniversary Edition. 15 cards and 1 sticker per pack.

Braves/Cubs/Reds/Astros sticker
Rickey Henderson - A's - Patrick Smith (Wahoo!!)
Steve Rosenberg - White Sox - Free Agent
Rick Mahler - Reds - Free Agent
Marquis Grissom - Expos - Dayf (Wahoo!!)
Darnell Coles - Mariners - Free Agent
Matt Williams - Giants - Workman41 (Wahoo!!)
Matt Kinzer (Cardinals)/Wayne Edwards (White Sox) - Free Agent/Jccsst (Wahoo!!)
Rick Reed - Pirates - Free Agent
Keith Comstock - Mariners - Free Agent
Willie McGee - Cardinals - Kerry Biggs (Wahoo!!)
Mike Boddicker - Red Sox - Free Agent
Gene Nelson - A's - Free Agent
Jeff Parrett - Phillies - Free Agent
Todd Stottlemyre - Blue Jays - Free Agent
Bill Landrum - Pirates - Free Agent

Okay, let's see who snags Kinzer and ends up with the combo card. Will it be Jccsst or the person who drafts Kinzer in Friday's draft? Meanwhile, more manager love going around to some of you. Some of us, however, are feeling a bit left out in the cold despite the heat. a couple more packs might help warm things up.

How about 1988 Donruss. 15 cards and Stan Musial puzzle per pack.

Stan Musial puzzle 31, 32, 33 - Cardinals - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Mike Heath - Tigers - Free Agent
John Kruk - Padres - Padrographs (Wahoo!!)
Jimmy Key - Blue Jays - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Wally Ritchie - Phillies - Free Agent
Matt Young - Dodgers - Free Agent
Al Newman - Twins - Free Agent
Rob McClure - Expos - Free Agent
Billy Hatcher Diamond King - Astros - Free Agent
Todd Worrell - Cardinals - Free Agent
Mike Morgan - Mariners - gcrl (Wahoo!!)
Dale Murphy - Braves - Backstop Cards (Wahoo!!)
Dan Quisenberry - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)
Mike Greenwell - Red Sox - Free Agent
Buddy Bell - Reds - Free Agent
Julio Franco Diamond Kings - Indians (Wahoo!) - Workman (Wahoo!!)

Way to end that pack! Pull a Triber from the deck and hand it off to Workman. Great stuff! Speaking of great stuff, there are some winners in here for sure. Also a couple surprises. I didn't realize Buddy Bell was still up for grabs. I'll have to try for him in the draft.

The last pack of the day comes to us from Score. 1991 Score Series 2. 16 cards and 1 magic motion card per pack.

Marvell Wynne - Cubs - Free Agent
David Cone - Mets - Paul Hadsall (Wahoo!!)
Juan Samuel - Dodgers - DanHouck (Wahoo!!)
Dennis "Denny" Martinez - Expos - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Dave Stewart Dream Team - A's - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Ron Karkovice - White Sox - Free Agent
Kevin Reimer - Rangers - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Mike MacFarlane - Royals - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Efrain Valdez - Indians (Wahoo!) - Free Agent
US Flag in support of Desert Storm Troops
Ray Stephens - Cardinals - Free Agent
Ed Vosberg - Giants - Free Agent
Dodgers Do It Magic Motion (#17)
Carney Lansford - A's - Padrographs (Wahoo!!)
Francisco Oliveras - Giants - Free Agent
Dale Murphy - Braves - Backstop Cards (Wahoo!!)
Roger Clemens - Red Sox - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)

Holy smokes! Akgonzolyn steals this pack with a four-bagger! Congratulations, man! A big congrats goes out to the other managers bringing in players to their piles as well! For the record, the cards are not in piles. I'm using 800-count boxes with dividers. In fact, after the latest draft, I will have to move to another 800-count box! Things are getting too crowded with all the cards being handed out.

Here's a bit of trivia before we turn things loose for the rest of this Sunday afternoon: As of this writing, there are 1130 players in the system (does not include yesterday's or today's cards). The biggest advantage to doing things this way is that next year, if I use players, I'll have a pre-built starting point by pulling the names from this year's break!

Tribecards from Outer Space: When '94 is nearly 20.

Hey everyone! Hope you're having a wonderful Saturday evening. We spent the day with our best friends at the lake. All our kids and some of their friends were there, too, to celebrate our friends' daughter's birthday.

Tonight, though, I'm here to rip some wax open. How about 1994 Topps Series 2. 12 cards per pack. Hard to believe 1994 cards are nearly 20 years old. No way that's vintage, man.

Andy Ashby - Padres - Free Agent
Bruce Ruffin - Rockies - Backstop Cards (Wahoo!!)
Lloyd McClendon - Pirates - Free Agent
Junior Ortiz - Indians (Wahoo!) - Free Agent
Josue Estrada - Expos Draft Pick - Free Agent
Geronimo Pena - Cardinals - Free Agent

Dante Bichette - Rockies - Free Agent
Eduardo Perez - Angels - Free Agent
Kirk McCaskill - White Sox - Free Agent
Marc Barcelo - Twins draft pick - Free Agent
Darren Holmes - Rockies - Free Agent

Well, we pulled a triber from the deck! And, we managed to hand out a few cards in the process! Congrats to each of you pulling a card tonight.

Finally, the 6/22/13 draft

Having my local ISP right about now sucks. Finally got connected again, so let's run this draft before things get wonky again.

Here is this week's draft:

There are 20 slots to fill, so have fun storming the castle!

Tribecards from Outer Space: Pump Up The Free Agents

Hey, folks! I just finished running through the free agents for this week, and we only have 29 total. Really? Well, I like some good competition, so I am busting several packs to try and sweeten the pot. Besides, we all know that means managers will be walking away with cards, too. Mickey Mantle MHR96 - Yankees - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)

Okay, we drew a few more free agents. managers took away some nice players. Sweet snag for Stealing Home on the Mickey Mantle.

Kyle Weiland - Astros - Free Agent
Jacob Turner - Tigers - Free Agent
Nate Spears (Red Sox), Corey Brown (Nats), Drew Pomeranz (Rockies), Adron Chambers (Cards) -2012 Rookie Stars - Free Agent, Free Agent, Prowlingcat (Wahoo!!), Free Agent

Carlos Ruiz - Phillies - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)

Great job, managers! This was certainly a pack for you. Plus, we had a couple multi-player cards to boot. We added a couple players to the free agent pile.

Okay, we have expanded the free agent list to 46 players! That is plenty to get us going!  Look for the draft later tonight.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Three-or-Four-for-Thursday

Hey, folks! Welcome to another Thursday edition of Tribecards from Outer Space. My stupid Internet Service (service, yeah right) Provider has our network all messed up throughout the state of Arkansas, so I am composing this offline and will post it one way or another. Oh, I know, you're thinking, "Dude, we have no way of know that. Why tell us?" My response: I dunno.

We're doing a Three-for-Thursday. Heck, we may even do more than that. Who knows. When things go wonky, the best course of action is to go wonky with them!

Let's start with a pack of 1994 Donruss Triple Play. 12 cards per pack.

Joel Johnston - Pirates - Free Agent
Jeff McNeely Rookie Revue - Red Sox - Free Agent
Paul Molitor - Blue Jays - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Orestes Destrade - Marlins - Free Agent
Jimmy Key - Yankees - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Deion Sanders - Braves - Dominicfdny (Wahoo!!)
Craig Biggio - Astros - Samuel Pair (Wahoo!!)
Don Slaught - Pirates - Free Agent
Mike MacFarlane - Royals - Akgonzolyn (Wahoo!!)
Brady Anderson - Orioles - Night Owl (Wahoo!!)
Chad Curtis - Angels - Free Agent
Jeff Montgomery - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)

Holy smokes! Anyone else think that Akgonzolyn used 1994 Triple Play upon which to base his draft picks? Way to go, man! And, congrats to the other managers, too. With that pack, it's a wonder anyone else got cards! Haha!

Our next pack is 2013 Gypsy Queen. 6 cards per pack.

Tony Gwynn - Padres - Backstop cards (Wahoo!!)
Brandon Moss - A's - Free Agent
Carlos Gonzalez Sliding Stars - Rockies - Community Gum (Wahoo!!)
Mike Moustakas Mini - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)
Dexter Fowler - Rockies - Dayf (Wahoo!!)
Cal Ripken Jr - Orioles - Workman (Wahoo!!)

Am I the only one that silently reads any Ripken card as "Cal (cal) Ripken (Ripken) Junior (Junior)!" As if some imaginary announcer somewhere is saying his name to a sold-out stadium crowd over the PA system? Oh, I am the only one? Well, then I'm like Tigger. I digress. Often. Congrats to the managers who snagged up some great players here.

Our third pack tonight is a Tristar repack thing. 5 cards per pack. Or however many they put in there. You never know about these guys.

Alvin Davis 1987 Topps - Mariners - Free Agent
Greg Maddux 1990 Fleer - Cubs - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)
Rafael Belliard 1990 Topps - Pirates - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)
Pat Borders 1989 Topps - Blue Jays - Free Agent
Will Clark 1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier - Giants - BSnider (Wahoo!!)

Well, the good Cap'n ran aaway with the majority of players in that pack! Nice job, eh! Congrats to BSnider for sneaking in there as well.

Okay, since things are certainly LOONEY around here, let's bust open a pack of 1990 Looney Tunes Comic Ball cards. 12 cards per pack.

042/051 "Porky Pig and Charlie Dog" (I will scan all of these so you can see them)
207/210 "Father Knows Worst" (Each card is numbered on each side. How looney.)
422/425 "Which pitch is Witch?" (How alliterately punny!)
009/012 "Tasmanian Devil" (Pic on front, Bio on back)
202/211 "Father Knows Worst" (Only this time, it features Sylvester)
417/432 "Hopalong Casualty"/"Which Pitch is Witch?" (What the mess!? Different on each side)
004/013 "Wile E. Coyote" (Like the Devil card, pic/bio)
278/281 "Hold the Mustard"/"Trick Baseballs" (Really!?)
385/388 "Mighty Angelo" (Daffy/Marvin)
566/569 "Curve Ball" (Daffy on one side, and the whole Looney cast on the other)
187/190 "Acme Battle (Bugs/Porky)
380/395 "Mighty Angelo" (Marvin/Daffy)

These are seriously weird cards. The wrapper, by the way, is the most "foil-like" I have ever seen. It is thick material and feels like you are opening one of those chocolate gold coins. I'm sure Baseball Dad will appreciate it. What's that? Why would he? If you didn't know, Baseball Dad collects wrappers. I am sending one (er, I am trying to limit it to one) type wrapper for every pack we open! I sent him a small sampling some time ago and now I have quite the collection of wrappers to send to him. Should keep him plenty busy while he works on his new "Man Cave."

These Looney cards will be randomly distributed among all the managers. Yes, even if you don't want one.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Congrats and Bustin Wax

First of all, a BIG congrats to Chris Reed! Chris correctly named the only player left as a Free Agent following the most recent draft - Jeff Neimann. Now, I don't know if Chris went through the posts and figured it out or if he simply opened the current Managers/Players list, scrolled down to the "FREE AGENT" section and found the only person listed there. Either way, we have a winner!

Now, before anyone gets to kicking dirt around, let's bust open some wax and see who else gets cards!

1988 Donruss. Puzzle and 15 cards per pack.

Stan Musial Puzzle 31, 32, 33 - Cardinals - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Billy, Cal Sr, Cal Jr Ripken Baseball Family - Orioles - Free Agent/Free Agent?/Workman41 (Wahoo!!)
Mike Schmidt MVP - Phillies - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)
Greg Myers - Blue Jays - Free Agent
Ed Romero - Red Sox - Free Agent
Domingo Ramos - Mariners - Free Agent
Donnie Moore - Angels - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Randy Myers - Mets - Free Agent
Barry Lyons - Mets - Free Agent
Joe Carter MVP - Indians (Wahoo!) - trhdds (Wahoo!!)
Gene Garber - Royals - Free Agent

Wade Boggs MVP - Red Sox - ScottCrawfordOnCards (Wahoo!!)
Bobby Meacham - Yankees - Free Agent
Scott Lusader - Tigers - Free Agent
Lee Mazzilli - Mets - Free Agent

Stealing Home stole two cards! Nice! Congrats to the others who snagged cards, too. Was Lusaders' nickname "LightSaber?" If not, it should have been. Not for his batting necessarily but just because of his name. I was also shocked to see Mazzilli hadn't come up before this. Man, there were a LOT of Mets in the pack.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Two-for-Tuesday

I purposely posted the fact that only one player had not been drafted as of the last draft.  I also purposely did NOT reveal which player that was. So, let's have a quick little 'instant-win' contest. The first person to respond to this post with the correct answer will win an assortment of cards. ANYONE can win this! You do not have to be a manager!

So, be the first to answer correctly: Who was the only player still listed as a Free Agent as they appeared in the 6/15/2013 draft? (Note: Players opened after the draft started were not in that draft!)

So, what cards does the winner get?

  • 2013 Gypsy Queen Nolan Ryan No Hitters
  • 2013 Topps George Brett shiny Chasing History (.400 batting avg)
  • 1983 Fleer stickers: A's Logo, Rickey Henderson Stolen Base, Rickey Henderson regular
  • 2013 Topps Ian Kennedy mini 70's
  • 2013 Topps Blue Border Daniel Nava
  • 2013 Gypsy Queen Travis Snider Glove Stories
  • *NOTE: None of the cards above were taken from packs to be used in the season break!
Now, let's open a couple packs! 1995 Phil Rizzuto National Pastime is up first. 7 cards per pack.

Cincinnati American Association
Stadium Scene
Bobby Wallace - Free Agent
South Side Park
Chicago & All-American
Scorecard Artwork

Hey, we get to add a player to the mix! How cool!  Some of these are also duplicates, so a couple of you will get the same card when these are handed out at the end of the season.

The second pack tonight is 2013 Gypsy Queen. 6 cards per pack.

Trevor Bauer - Indians (Wahoo!) - IrishTribeFan (Wahoo!!)
Alex Cobb - Rays - Free Agent
Alexi Ramirez Mini - Free Agent
Catfish Hunter - A's - Wicked4Life (Wahoo!!)
George Brett - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)
Michael Fiers - Brewers - Free Agent

Congrats to the three managers who pulled players form the pack! The good news for the rest of us: more free agents into the pool!

Tribecards from Outer Space: Draft and a Pack

Hey everyone! Thanks for coming along for tonight's pack break. Before we get started with that, though, we have the draft to show! Click on the images to see larger versions. The updated manager/player list is here:

We had *ONE* player left unclaimed at the end of the draft. How sad for him. On the other hand, Phil Rizzuto had 19 votes, Mike Mussina had 15 votes, and Lillibridge had 14. Even the next tier of players huddled around 8-10 votes each. Shows we had a lot of interest, for sure!  Once again, this was all about the order in which the names were randomized and where you picked your players in the various rounds.

Tonight's pack is a Topps 2010 Update Series. 5 cards per pack.

Jose Valverde - Tigers - Free Agent
Mark Ellis - A's - Free Agent
Alex Avila - Tigers - Free Agent
Phil Hughes/David Price Young Al East Aces - Bo Rosny/Tim_Gretchen (Wahoo!!/Wahoo!!)
Matt Thornton - AL All-Star - Bo Rosny (Wahoo!!)

There ya go! Split one card and snag the next for yourself. Haha! Congrats to Bo and Tim will have to wait until the end of the season to see if he can snag that other card.

Some very cool cards from Pedersej!

Somehow, this envelope of goodies got mixed in with several packs I had bought, and I didn't see it until now!  These little goodies came from Pedersej! These are FANTASTIC additions to my Tribecards collection!! Thank you so much for your generosity!!

Tribecards from Outer Space: Talkin bout an Evolution

Hey everyone!  Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there!  Hope you had a great Sunday with your family. If you aren't a father, I hope you had a great Sunday as well. If you're ready to bust some wax, then we're in the same ballpark! Let's do it.

2001 Upper Deck Evolution. 5 cards per pack.

Ken Griffey Jr - Reds - Patrick Smith (Wahoo!!)
Luis Gonzales - DBacks - Goblue2112 (Wahoo!!)
Frank Thomas - White Sox - Brauer144 (Wahoo!!)
Larry Walker - Rockies - E_Rose (Wahoo!!)

Major League Movie Cards - An Update, Sorta

As many of my regular readers know, one set of Indians-related cards has eluded me for years. Decades, really.  That is the Major League Movie cards handed out during the filming of the movie in Milwaukee.

Over the years, I've had folks offer to sell me a single here or there, and at one point, a full set. That's great! The price was not. I think when all said and done, the first full set was offered to me at about $500.  Now, look, I know this set has scarcity written all over it. But, come on. $500 for 11 cards of actors who weren't even actual baseball players? No way.

Well, the other day, Paul K contacted me to tell me had a sealed set and about 9 of the set in banged up singles. I made an offer and he let me know he already had one higher than mine.

Here's my perspective on this: I want the set pretty badly. But, these are bits of cardboard with pictures on them, so I am not about to go crazy. I am not saying Paul's response was crazy. Not at all. The counteroffer, though. Wow.

There are 11 cards in the set. My maximum offer is roughly $10 per card. It's actually a tad higher, but that's close enough for government work, as they say. Some folks seem to be willing to pay $20 per card. That is not the amount of the other offer, just an observation. I don't have that kind of disposable income, but even if I did, I'd have a hard time justifying such a price to myself.  If I had the cards to sell and could find someone willing to pay $20 per card, you bet I would sell to them.  But, buying them is a different animal.

The hunt continues, I'm afraid.

Tribecards from Outer Space: The Big One

Hey folks! Hope everyone is getting ready for Father's Day - whatever that means to each of you. Whether you are a father and/or celebrate with your father, or the person who stood in your life as your father, I hope you have a great day on Sunday!

Tonight, I am opening a pack of Topps 1990 Big Baseball 1st series. 8 cards per pack.

Bo Jackson - Royals - Cardanathema (Wahoo!!)
Don Mattingly - Yankees - Brownpg (Wahoo!!)
Ron Oester - Reds - FanOfReds (Wahoo!!)
Steve Buechele - Rangers - Free Agent
Gerald Young - Astros - Free Agent
Frank White - Royals - Josh Denhartog (Wahoo!!)
Eric Show - Padres - Free Agent
Ron Hassey - A's - Free Agent

Well, we split the pack! Half of the cards were claimed and half will be put into next week's pot to be claimed!  As an aside, the back of each card features the player's full, given name. So, "Bo" is listed as Vincent Edward Jackson. Yeah, I think "Bo" works better.

Tribecards from Outer Space: The race is on - Draft Time!

Hey everyone! We have 43 players in this week's draft! Wow! That is the upside to busting open packs with a lot of cards in them, right!? Well, since there are so many, I've bumped this week's draft up to 25 choices! You read that correctly: you can choose up to 25 players to draft this week!

The draft will remain open until sometime Monday evening... or Tuesday. My daughter has her last softball game of the season on Monday, so it may be a late night depending on what the coach has planned for them.  In any case, you have several days to make your picks!

Oh yeah, you might want the link, eh!

6/15 draft:

Good luck and have fun!

Tribecards from Outer Space: The Wright Stuff

Hey everyone!  I totally forgot about running the names for the draft, so I will have that posted on Saturday and will run it through Monday night. Let's see if we can add more names to the draft.

Tribecards from Outer Space: Two fer Tuesday

Hey, folks!  I can't remember the last time we did a 2-for, so we're going to do one tonight!

First up, a pack of the 1984 Donruss Baseball Champions. Puzzle and 5 cards.

Babe Ruth - Yankees - Stealing Home (Wahoo!!)
Checklist Card
Don Sutton - Brewers - gcrl (Wahoo!!)
Hal McRae - Royals - Free Agent
Carl Yastrzemski - Red Sox - BConrad (Wahoo!!)

Very nicely done! Man, how do you argue with the guys in this pack? Can you imagine pulling these back in '84!? Wait. Many of you probably can't. Haha!

Next up, 2011 Topps Series Two. 12 cards per pack.

Edwin Jackson - White Sox - Free Agent
Lorenzo Cain - Royals - Free Agent
Grady Sizemore - Indians (Wahoo!) - IrishTribeFan (Wahoo!!)

Okay, we snagged a handful of manager-owned cards out of the pack, and left more than that ready fr the taking! That Diamond Anniversary card is SWEET! The Toppstown card is foil. Were all the TT cards foil in 2011? The card number starts with TT2, so it made me wonder - though admittedly not enough to Google it for myself. Ha!

Tribecards from Outer Space: The draft and a pack

Hey all, I let the draft picks go until this evening (Monday). Here are the results:

We had one shut-out. Sorry, Jccsst!  Cy Young had the most requests: 19 out of the 26 managers wanted a shot at Cy Young, but in the end, Workman41 snagged him up. It is all about the fall of the randomization on that one!

Here is the updated manager/player list:

Let's jump into a pack of cards from when Topps first re-started its monopoly of the MLB trading card license. A pack of 2010 Topps Series 1. 8 cards per pack.

C.C. Sabathia - Yankees - Brownpg (Wahoo!!)
Tim Stauffer - Padres - (Wahoo!!)
Miguel Tejada - Astros - Pedersej (Wahoo!!)
Chase Utley - Phillies - Dawgbones (Wahoo!!)
Colorado Rockies Franchise History
Dexter Fowler Turkey Red - Rockies - Free Agent
Ryan Braun Toppstown - Brewers - Thorzul (Wahoo!!)
Andruw Jones - Rangers - Captain Canuck (Wahoo!!)

Very nice! Way to go, managers! There are some nice-looking cards in here. I really like the Turkey Red variations.
