#PackADailyCircus - 96-99 - Pinch Hit Donruss Packs

Well, yesterday was a thing that has happened. I hope you all aren't going to expect Beeg Mojo Heetz in every post now. Let's switch gears and open up some Donruss from 2005. That's the last time you could get  Donruss with logos on them. Don't worry, it won't be too much of a shock - Donruss still had gaudy too-busy colorful awful designs back then too! I'll start with a set that had a gaudy too-busy colorful awful pretty design: 2005 Donruss Diamond Kings.

Look at that design. LOOK AT IT. It's a terrible baseball card design! but it's so preeeeeeetty. How does Donruss do that?!  Notice also the dreadful design on cover boy George Brett's insert card. This is what happens when you value the placement of relics more than the picture on the card. Get used to seeing George in this post, Donruss threw a big ol' pile of money at him in 2005.

Up next is a pack of 2005 Playoff Absolute with a wrapper that might actually be appropriate for a 2015 Donruss product!

I spent about 15 minutes trying to think of a joke to make fun of this design but I got nothin' so these cards are obviously beautiful then. I mean, what even is this?? And blue foil on top of it! Ack, let's move on before these cards hypnotize me and make me become its evil minion. 2005 Zenith to the rescue!

Northampton Therapists is happy now but one of you mischievous persons can attempt to snatch Dontrelle away from him in the draft! MUAHAHA!!!  I'll let --David clean up that mess though.

this is unlicensed Donruss and there are logos on the cards? Why'd Upper Deck get the chop from MLB then? I WANT MY 2010 GOUDEY! Ok, I think Donruss might have gotten in trouble for this set too but I don't remember because that was like 100 years ago. I got my first card though! Ironically it's a card I got bipped with a few years ago, but I can add it to the pile now. There's plenty of Free Agents for you all, anyone who wants to see what Sean Doolittle looked like before he turned into a lumberjack might want to put Sean high on their draft list. The post ends with a card of George Brett, which is very appropriate.

Day one of my pinch hitting week went well, let's stick with some Topps products today. Most of the packs I'm ripping this week came out of a box of wax packs that I had used on one of those 'Pack-a-day' blogs or were supposed to be ripped on one of those blogs or I ripped it and put it in a box and forgot about it. Let's start it off with a product I despise and all the cool kids love: Bowman Chrome. Specifically, the 2005 edition.

#PackADailyCircus: Next week, we're bringing in a pinch hitter!

 
As happens every year around this time, my family will be taking a summer vacation! This year, we're headed to San Antonio and Dallas. Usually, I just try to post from the road trip, busting packs, etc, as I can.

This year, @cardjunk (most of you know as dayf) offered to "pinch hit" while we are away, and I quickly agreed to the offer before he had time to stop and think about it.

So, from Sunday, June 28 through Saturday July 4, dayf will be busting packs and making posts on my behalf. I'll still be checking in, but mostly as a reader.

I appreciate dayf stepping in while my family heads into the hot, humid depths of the heart of Texas. Oh yeah, while we're out, we will be catching a Rangers game in Arlington!

As a matter of drafting: First, I am behind this week. Seems to be the usual lately and I am hoping that this vacation will help kick my butt in gear. We will postpone the next draft until after I get back. It should be quite a doozie since we're talking two full weeks of pack breaks.

I had wanted to run the OOTP and draft last night, but I was a slacker. No other way to say it. I'll run it tonight (Wednesday) and get things ready for dayf to step in and bust packs starting Sunday.

Father's Days Cards

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there!*

My kids celebrated by buying me cards for Father's Day. I got a STEAM card which I will use toward the purchase of Far Cry 4 now that I have a machine that can actually run it.

The other cards I got, though, were of the favorited cardboard variety. I got two blasters: 2015 Heritage and 2015 Bowman. In all, there were about 150 cards, roughly. These are a handful (er, okay, technically two handfuls or nearly two or something) of my favorites:

The top row (left to right) includes a Jason Kipnis Refractor, Lonnie Chisenhall, and and Giovanny Urshler. That Kipnis is freaking spectacular! For me, what makes it stand out more than most refractors is the Pepsi logo in the background. Not because it is Pepsi, but because it adds a very cool red, white and blue "patriotic" feel to the card. In fact, I had to do a double take to realize it was a logo. Very cool!

The middle row includes Carlos Carrasco, Taylor Dugas, and Starling Marte. Now, you may be wondering why I chose those two non-Indians cards. The Dugas is probably obvious: it's an out. Sure, it is a STICKER auto, but, it is still an auto. It's numbered 322/499. I cannot imagine having to sit there and write my name 499 times. No wonder it looks a bit rough by the time we get to 322. The Marte is classic baseball posturing. Well, in terms of close-up, low-angle, looking up at the player type stuff. I love the bat behind the head, staring off as if watching for a pitch look. And, yeah, it doesn't hurt that he's a Buc.

The bottom row features Sandy Koufax, Cliff Lee, and Ryne Sandberg. I chose Koufax because, well, it's freakin' Koufax. How could you NOT choose him!? Cliff Lee? Yeah, former Triber who was born and raised up I-30 from where I now live. And, Sandberg? See the Koufax comment. He has always been a part of my PC and it is very cool to get him on a card as a manager to add to that.

These nine guys, along with several of the others from the blasters, will go into my personal collection. Years from now, I hope I look at them and remember that my kids knew me well enough to get me cardboard for Father's Day.

I did not post yesterday and I am posting VERY late today because, well, I've been ripping up the little town known as Los Santos. You might have heard of it. Eh, maybe not. Turns out, I have a 3-way split personality and each of them loves driving erratically, shooting up a bunch of people, and performing bizarre tasks for well-to-do thugs. Hello, everyone!

I managed to leave the box of 2015 Bowman at work - AGAIN! In my defense, I spent the day out of my office, broadcasting live online for a new program that a colleague and I have launched called EduTechGuys. We ran a live show from 8a-4p in the lobby of the venue hosting the Corwin Student Voice and Student Engagement Institute hosted by Southwest Arkansas Education Cooperative where I work.
