I don't have a catchy name for this year's contest. Last year, I called it "182 Packs of Baseball" but that didn't actually apply since I opened packs on 182 days of the regular season, but there were over 200 actual packs opened (I opened multiple packs on more than one occasion). Since that is likely to happen again this season, I don't want to say "183 Packs." Ah well, I digress (often).
What I am actually posting here are some links to some very helpful resources. These are player lists/rosters to help you hammer out your picks. Now, not everyone in these lists may have a baseball card, so you may have to do some research and then decide the odds of us busting a pack of cards with some of those guys. Regardless, I hope these will give you a head start:
List of MLB Batters (1800s-2012) - Sorted by player last name
List of MLB Pitchers (1800s-2012) - Sorted by player last name
GameDay Roster page with links to MLB 40-Man rosters and minor league rosters.
(Note: The player links are for reference only. You choose ANY player you want! Who knows what players will end up in the packs we bust open.)
If you have other resources you'd like to share, feel free to leave a comment and I'll add them.
*My apologies to the site where I found the Batters/Pitchers lists - I can't remember where I found those. You get all the credit, though, for putting those together!
As for the first round of picks, I will send participants a link to the form we will use to indicate player choices. Remember, the first "draft round" will consist of each participant choosing 20 players and those will be handed out in a random draft format (that is, participant names will be randomized and then their picks will be handed out based on draft order).
So, another thing to think about: the order of your initial 20 players. Just like a fantasy baseball draft, your preferred order could mean all the difference! Once the initial draft is over, I will post the results and then we will build the rosters as we bust open packs throughout the season!
