182 Packs of Baseball - 118 - Time keeps on slippin, slippin, slippin...

I was fortunate enough to be involved with a live, interactive virtual field trip to the Baseball Hall of Fame earlier today (Tuesday).  The group of folks participating examined the economics of baseball from a Middle School level.  It was great fun!  It is definitely one of the perks of being employed where I am.  A discussion after the program came up regarding baseball cards, values, etc. Of course, the 'junk wax' era of the 90's came up.

Well, today is no junk wax day.  I pulled a pack of 2007 Upper Deck Future Stars Baseball out of the box.  There are a whopping four cards in the pack, according to the label. Let's see what we have:

Johan Santana - Twins
Aaron Harang - Reds
Justin Verlander - Tigers
Alfonso Soriano - Cubs

The cards are very 2000's with their pseudo-techy look and weird font choice.  Definitely "future" stars in here, though!

182 Packs of Baseball - 117 - Tribers Galore!

Whew! What a Monday. I thought I was actually going to get this post in early. Haha, so much for that! To top it off, I won't have pictures again.  That bugs me more than it does you, I'm sure.

Well, the 116th day of the full regular season brings us a pack of 1996 Leaf Hobby.

Inserts Checklist (Features pic of Tony Gwynn on one side and Edgar Martinez on the other)
Steve Finley - Padres
Jeff Kent - Mets
Manny Ramirez - Indians - WAHOO!
Mike Piazza - Dodgers
Mike Mussina - Orioles
Matt Williams - Giants
David Justice - Braves
Rusty Greer - Rangers
Kenny Lofton - Indians - WAHOO!!
Ruben Rivera - Yankees - Gold Leaf Rookies
Sandy Alomar - Indians - WAHOO!!!

Wow! Three Indians in one pack of cards! Wahoo! Naturally, I don't have pics this time. Can this Monday finally be over? Yes, yes it can.

182 Packs of Baseball - 116 - Quest for Vlad

I hate that they took baseball out of the Olympics - all because we kicked everyone's butt so badly, "it wasn't fair."  Seriously? Yes, seriously.

Well, no fear of that here! Tonight, we've got a pack of 2008 Upper Deck First Edition Update to carry us through.

Tom Glavine - Braves
Garrett Atkins - Rockies
Edgar Renteria - Tigers
James Loney - Dodgers
Brett Meyers - Phillies
Tadahito Iguchi - Padres
Blake Dewitt
Randy Winn - Giants
Kurt Suzuki - A's
Vladimir Guerrero - Angels - StarQuest Common

Each day of the regular baseball season, I am busting open a pack of baseball cards.  These are packs that I have laying around and/or that I have purchased recently on a whim.  I list the cards in the pack and scan in some of them.  I shoot for 9 cards, but sometimes I may scan more, other times fewer.  It all depends on how things hit me in that particular pack.  Oh yes, there will be duplication.  I have a TON of packs from certain brands/years.  I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

For those keeping score, I know there are not actually 182 GAMEDAYS in the 2012 season.  I am counting ALL the days between Opening Day and the last day of the regular season.  Frankly, it's easier that way.  Thanks for playing along.

Also, you are welcome to claim teams/players (Max 3 total). Rules are at the following:

182 Packs of baseball - 115 - Banks on it

I don't know if anyone else is excited about the Olympics, but I sure am. I love watching all the competitions and rooting for the U.S of A!! Wahoo!!

Tonight's pack features sports heroes from the diamond in a pack of 2008 Upper Beck Baseball Heroes:

Ernie Banks - Cubs
Matt Cain - Giants

Jose Reyes - Mets - Red Parallel (131/249)
Graig Nettles - Yankees - Stadium Legacy
Prince Fielder - Brewers

I met Mr. Banks during a trip to Chicago once. CDW took several of us out to supper where Ernie regularly dines (sorry, I don't remember the name of the place). Anyway, Mr. Banks sat at the table behind us. When we left, he did too and we all shook hands as he waited for his car to be brought around.  One of the highlights of my "baseball life."  The Reyes card is one sweet-looking piece of cardboard.

182 Packs of Baseball - 113 - No shenanigans here

Well, today's big hobby news comes from the world of collectible auction houses. Turns out, several key players in a Wagner T206 have been indicted on fraud charges.  As I posted on Facebook, the news is disheartening and yet not at all surprising.

Well, there is no fraud here, folks. Just honest-to-goodness pack busting.  Today's pack comes from the 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars collection. Yes, again. I told you, I have a lot of these!

Tony Gwynn - Padres - Pop-up
Tommy Herr - Cardinals
Harold Baines - White Sox
Garry Templeton - Padres
Hank Aaron - Braves - Puzzle 13, 14, 15

I will say this, as I have before: there should plenty of doubles from this set to go around!

182 Packs of baseball - 112 - Into the Mix

By request, I picked up some more packs of 2011 Topps Attax! I have decided to toss these packs into the big ol' box so they will appear randomly through the rest of the season.

Let's see what's in this pack of 2011 Attax:

Adrian Gonzalez - Red Sox
Target Field - Twins
Ubaldo Jimenez - Rockies
Carlos Quentin - White Sox
Coco Crisp - A's
Chris Young - Diamondbacks
Home Run Derby Rules

If memory serves, the only duplicate from this pack comes in the way of the Home Run Rules. Looks like we've got some fun additions to the players/teams on the claim list!

182 Packs of Baseball - 111 - Won-Won-Won Wonder Wheels!

Happy Birthday to my oldest son today!! Wahoo!  Hard to believe I have a son getting ready for his senior year in high school. Man, where does the time disappear?

The subtitle comes from a cartoon I used to watch when I was kid.  Anyone else remember that show? Probably not. To me, it was like some kind of "Scooby Doo" rip off.  That has nothing to do with busting wax, but it did pop into my head when I typed the day number. I digress. Often.

Today's pack is a 2008 Bowman.

Alex Rios - Blue Jays
Brandon Webb - Diamondbacks
Derrek Lee - Cubs
Aubrey Huff - Orioles
Austin Kearns - Nationals
Iggy Suarez - Red Sox
Anthony Claggett - Yankees
Brian Finegan - Indians - Chrome - WAHOO!!
Ryan Khoury - Red Sox - Chrome
Michael McHenry - Rockies - Gold

Hey, glad I pulled an Indians player out of that one! Very cool.  The gold card sure is nice, too.

182 Packs of Baseball - 110 - HOFers

Here we are - Monday again.  I know many folks start their day with a cup of coffee, catching up on the news, or checking to see what all their friends did on Facebook last night.  I prefer to bust some wax.

Today, I've got another 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars to show you:

Terry Kennedy - Padres - Pop-up
Ozzie Smith - Cardinals
Eddie Murray - Orioles
Tony Gwynn - Padres
Hank Aaron Puzzle - Braves - 46, 47, 48

I realized while opening this that I have not been listing Aaron with his team. I figured it was kind of a given.  In the meantime, we've got a sweet pack of HOFers here!  That plays well, considering the induction was this past weekend and Ozzie Smith said he was, "Trying to do (his) part," when asked by reporters why he comes to the ceremonies.  That is a class act right there.

182 Packs of Baseball - 109 - Foiled (or not)

Moving right along with our "Pack-a-Day (and sometimes more)" season break, I have reached into the big ol' box of packs and today's little nugget of cardboard goodness comes from 2009 Upper Deck Icons. Wow, I didn't even realize I had Icons still in there! See? Even *I* don't know what I've got.

Magglio Ordonez - Tigers
Ichiro - Mariners
Carlos Quentin - White Sox - Foil
Roy Oswalt - Astros
John Lackey - Angels

That Quentin card is very shiny. i find it odd that the regular cards have gold foil logos and the foil card has a regular logo. We can't do foil-on-foil? Weird.

182 Packs of baseball - 108 - Triber Twofer!

With no funny one-liner or thought-provoking introduction to provide a deep, meaningful conversation starter on this Saturday, I simply give you: 1997 Pinnacle Hobby NEW

Wil Cordero - Red Sox
Craig Biggio - Astros
Sandy Alomar Jr - Indians - WAHOO!! Go Tribe!
Mark Grudzielanek - Expos

Kenny Lofton - Braves
Cliff Floyd - Marlins
Manny Ramirez - Indians - WAHOO! Another Triber!
Alex Rodriguez - Mariners
Cecil Fielder - Yankees
Bill Pulsipher - Mets

Wow! Two Indians in one pack - excellent! Then, it gets even better with the likes of Biggio, A-Rod, and Fielder. I'm sure other folks will enjoy their own team faves in there.

182 Packs of Baseball - 107 - Cards Attax!

Welcome to a Friday edition of "182 Cards!"  Okay, well, actually, the Friday edition is usually no different than any other edition, except that tonight, I've got 5 packs of 2011 Topps Attax.

Let's see what cool gaming goodness we can glean from these:

Mark Reynolds - Orioles
Angels Stadium of Anaheim
Jonathan Papelbon - Red Sox
Derek Jeter - Yankees
Adam Jones - Oriols
Alex Rios - White Sox

Kevin Youkilis - Red Sox
Nick Swisher - Yankees - FOIL
Ricky Romero - Blue Jays
Josh Willingham - A's
Dan Uggla - Braves
Hideki Matsui - A's

Carlos Santana - Indians - WAHOO!!
Dustin Pedroia - Red Sox
Dan Haren - Angels
Jason Bay - Mets
Jim Thome - Twins - AWESOME!
Geovany Soto - Cubs

Hey, there were some great player pulls in there, plus a Triber and a foil insert. Not a bad way to end a Friday!

My family's thought and prayers go out to all those impacted by the shooting in Aurora, Colorado, today. I used to live in Aurora, and I graduated from Rangeview High School.  I have a lot of memories from there, and I cannot even begin to imagine the pain, confusion, and suffering taking place.  We pray for thorough justice. But, mostly we pray that those families find refuge and comfort in the Lord and in those around them.

182 Packs of Baseball - 106 - Totally, Man

Today's post barely squeaks into the timeframe - before midnight CST.  This evening, I helped my wife in her classroom.  One of the things I love about her is that she does not like to have the same layout year after year - she likes to move things, spruce up, change themes, decorate. She takes a lot of pride in her room and she is completely dedicated to what she does.

Today's pack comes from 2005 Topps Total. That was a huge set of 770 cards, something collectors hadn't seen in a while (er, to my not-so-great recollection).  I miss those days. I like cheap cardboard with 660-770 players in the set. Forget inserts and parallels. Let's just collect cards, ya know?  Ah well, here we go!

Adam Everett - Astros
Geoff Blum - Padres
Jason Smith - Tigers
Sandy Alomar Jr - Rangers
Chris Aguila - Marlins - Silver border
Jorge Posada - Yankees
So Taguchi - Cardinals
Brad Penny - Dodgers
R.A. Dickey - Rangers
Dmitri Young - Tigers

Sorry there won't be scans of these unless I do it sometime this weekend. I can tell you that Posada looks like he is duck-walking his way to a stolen base, as if trying to sneak behind the pitcher.  I have no idea what kind of player Taguchi is/was, but there has got to be some kind of baseball-related feat to which the reply is "Dude, that was Sooo Taguchi, Man."  And, of course, we have RA Dickey long before this year's All-Star fiasco. Oh wait, we aren't supposed to talk about that...

182 Packs of baseball - 105 - Showin Clout

We have reached the middle of the week! The Indians have fallen to 3 games of out first in the AL Central division while the Pirates are tied for first in NL Central. Holy smokes, what is going here?!

I'll tell ya what's going on - pack-bustin', that's what!

Today, we've got 1997 Pinnacle Hobby:

Kenny Lofton - Indians - Clout - WAHOO! What a way to start a pack!
Jose Paniagua - Expos
Robin Jennings - Cubs
Brant Brown - Cubs
Jeff Cirillo - Brewers
Ryne Sandberg - Cubs
Chipper Jones - Braves
Alex Rodriguez - Mariners
Harold Baines - White Sox
Ron Gant - Cardinals

The Lofton card is great! I am pretty sure I have it, so it will get passed along. Cirillo is definitely going to the crazy card collector! What a goof.  He actually looks like the photog caught him by surprise - and not the good kind.  Boy, add in Sandberg, Jones, A-Rod and Baines, and we've made up quite a nice little pack for Hump Day.

182 Packs of Baseball - 104 - Xponential Fun

Hey everyone! Welcome to the 104th day of pack-busting goodness! I hope you're all having a good time checking out the different packs I've been opening throughout the season.  We still have a lot of baseball and a lot of packs to open.

Today's pack comes from 2009 Upper Deck X

Alex Rios - Blue Jays
Jake Peavy - Padres
Justin Morneau - Twins - Die Cut

Derrek Lee - Cubs - Xpontential (X2-DL)
Derek Holland - Rangers
Jose Reyes - Mets

Oh, man, that Xponential card is very cool! You can't tell it in the scan, but it is one shiny little piece of cardboard there. The die cuts are also a nice touch.

182 Packs of Baseball - 103 - Checklist? Why'd have to be a checklist?

Monday comes to a close, and with it, I bust some wax. It's a pretty good deal, I'd say.

Tonight, I've got another pack of 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars. I told you I had a LOT of these!

Hank Aaron puzzle - 58, 59, 60
Jack Morris - Tigers
Checklist
Graig Nettles - Padres
Dave Stieb - Blue Jays

182 Packs of Baseball - 102 - Iconic for sure

Hey everyone!  I know I have really shifted posting gears by moving to a late-night posting schedule. I'm not sure how that affects everyone, but I guess I'll let the analytics figure it out, eh.  And, if you know me, you know I'll end up with some other scheme before this is all said and done.  Maybe at lunchtime at work. Who knows!

For tonight,s pack-busting fun, though, I've got a 2009 Upper Deck Icons:

Carlos Zambrano - Cubs
Miguel Cabrera - Tigers
Derek Jeter - Yankees
Tim Hudson - Braves
Alex Rodriguez - Yankees

Well, they don't call 'em "Icons" for nothing.  These are certainly iconic players for their respective teams and a couple are iconic MLBers period.  What are we going to do when the post-Jeter era comes upon us?  Of course, I'm still pondering the Majors without Chipper Jones. That just seems weird - akin to when Ripken Jr retired.  Think on this one: My son has never known a Jeter-less Yankees team as he was born the same year Jeter debuted. He has also never known a Chipper-less Braves team. Now, THAT will make one start to feel old.

182 Packs of Baseball - 101 - Seeing Double

We are 101 days into the baseball season and the Tribe is 3 games behind the lead for AL Central. Meanwhile, the Bucs are only half a game out of first in the NL Central.  I'm hoping neither team blows it during the second half.  Pirates fans will remember how the team fell into total collapse - for the past 22 seasons.

I digress.  We're here to bust open some wax.  Today, I've got a pack of 1998 Stadium Club "Evens" for you:

Rondell White - Expos
Gary Sheffield - Marlins
Pedro Astacio - Rockies
Brady Anderson - Orioles
Manny Alexander - Cubs
Felix Heredia - Marlins
Felix Heredia - Marlins (That is not a mistype!)
Ben Grieve - A's - Prime Rookies
Walt Weiss - Braves - Transactions
Checklist 1 of 2

Yes, they really did put two Heredia cards back-to-back in the same pack.  And, I believe we have seen all these cards before except maybe the Prime Rookie.  That should mean some doubles to go around.

182 Packs of Baseball - 100 - Chipper!

Er, well, so much for the "special" I had planned for the 100th day of the baseball season. My daughter's birthday is Saturday, and she had a bunch of friends over for a sleepover.  In addition to the girls being up most of Thursday night, I have recently discovered a game called "Two Worlds" which I have been playing on my computer. So, chalk my lack of follow-through up to a group of 9-year olds and a guy who still THINKS he is nine. Haha!

Instead, I give you a pack of 1996 Leaf Hobby:

Jon Nunnally - Royals
Wade Boggs - Yankees
Mike Hampton - Astros
Rusty Greer - Rangers
Shawn Green - Blue Jays
David Segui - Expos
Robin Ventura - White Sox
Quilvio Veras - Marlins
Dwayne Hosey - Red Sox
Chipper Jones - Braves
Bernie Williams - Yankees
Al Martin - Pirates

That was great pulling a Chipper now that he is done and will be an easy 1st round HOFer!

182 Packs of Baseball - 099 - If I could turn back time

Wow, we are almost at the 100-day mark! Of course, I've got something special planned for the 100th day, but for now, we've got to take care of Day 99.

Let's welcome 2008 Upper Deck Timeline to the fray. Actually, I think I've opened a pack or two of these during the season. Maybe not. I'm too lazy right now to go check. Hey, just telling it like it is.

John Smoltz - Braves
Brandon Webb - Diamondbacks
Jake Peavy - Padres

Jonathan Van Every - Red Sox
Joe Gordon - Yankees - Stadium Legacy
Joey Votto - Reds - Grey/retro rookie card

I don't know if the Votto is an insert or not. I don't think so since it has a regular card number on the back (177). I like the Timeline design - clean, simple, splash of color.

182 Packs of Baseball - 098 - Better Nate than Lever!

I bet you thought, "Oh, yeah. Tribecards has finally missed his first day of pack busting. What is the world coming to next?" No? Well, I would have thought that. haha!

In the nick of time, I am busting open a 1990 Fleer pack (pictures will come later):

Twins Team Sticker
Fred Manrique - Rangers
Kevin Gross - Expos
Jim Eisenreich - Royals
Bob McClure - Angels
Gary Wayne - Twins
Joe Girardi - Cubs
Guillermo Hernandez - Tigers
Dennis Rasmussen - Padres
Ryne Sandberg - Cubs - 10th Anniversary Players of the Decade
Donell Nixon - Giants
Carlos Quintana - Red Sox
Dwight Smith - Cubs
Robin Yount - Brewers
Charlie O'Brien - Brewers
Luis de los Santos - Royals

Nice to see a couple Royals in there since the All-Star game was last night. The Sandberg is a neat insert, but for me, the Yount steals the show. Well, and the sticker of course. Who doesn't like stickers?

1986 Donruss ML All-Stars

Carlton Fisk - White Sox - Pop-up
Pete Rose - Reds
Jim Rice - Red Sox
Dick Williams - Padres

Derek Jeter - Yankees - Retrospectrum - ALL-STAR!
Derek Jeter - Yankees - Yankee Stadium Legacy - ALL-STAR!

Wow, TWO Jeters in one pack. Well, that's two more for Yankees/Jeter fans! Congrats!

182 Packs: All-Star Edition

Today's pack-busting fun will begin this evening as the All-Star game gets underway.  I will open one pack before the game starts (or maybe just after it starts). That will serve as the regular daily pack for the season.  Then, I will bust open a random pack for each run scored during the game!

I will post the pack busts all in ONE post, tacking on each break to the end of the list. Card scans will be added after the game at some point. I am working on some kind of a bonus system. The rough outline of which goes something like this: If a busted pack draws a player currently on the All-Star team, everyone that picked that player/team gets a prize of some kind.  For example, if I draw David Ortiz, then everyone who has Ortiz *or* Red Sox on their list will get a prize to be figured out, er, named later.

The drawn card itself will go to whichever participant gets rightful claim based on the regular season rules.

Remember, it is not too late to lay claim to teams and players. Granted, for the regular season, you would be relying on doubles (or doubles of doubles). But, for the All-Star Edition, you could snag some prizes.  You can choose up to THREE teams, players, or a mix but you only get three.

You can respond to this post to sign up.  Signups will be cut off at the end of the regular baseball season. Oh, I can already hear some of those wheels turning. I'll save you the headache: Yes, you can sign up for the all-star prizes (to be determined at some future date) even after the all-star game is long over and done, provided you have slots in your picks to do so. I'm easy like Sunday morning. What can I say?

Home Run Derby - Who Will Win It?

So, who do you think will win tonight's Home Run Derby? You would think that I would pick an AL player, seeing as how I am an Indians fan and all, but I am going a different route. Yeah, that's right, I'm taking the hometown boy, McCutchen. I think he will be the surprise player of the Derby and the All-Star Game. Though, of course, for the AS game, I'm pulling for my Tribers!

Name your picks. I'm sure I'll come up with some kind of prize for the the person who chooses the winner (I will only take your first response as your vote, though. No loading the ballots here!). Note: Any picks placed after the HR Derby starts are invalid for a prize, but are certainly welcomed as part of the conversation!

182 Packs of Baseball - 096 - No, not *that* MJ...

We are inching our way to the All-Star game! I've got a special break lined out for tomorrow's All-Star Game.  I am still irioning out some of the details, but I think it will a lot of fun. Well, it will be for me at least! Haha!

But, before we gethere, we've got some wax to bust today!  How about some 1998 Stadium Club Hobby EVENS?  Yeah, I need to find some ODD packs before this whole thing is over.

Pedro Astacio - Rockies
Mark Wohlers - Braves
Juan Gonzalez - Rangers
 Mann Alexander - Cubs
Shannon Stewart - Blue Jays
Mike Jackson - Indians - WAHOO!! An MJ Triber! W00T!
Roberto Duran - Tigers
Jay Bell - Diamondbacks - EXPANSION
Cecil Fielder - Angels - TRANSACTIONS
Checklist 2 of 2

Anyone else have the name "Wahlberg" jump in ther head for a moment? No? Just me. That Alexander card is hilarious. He looks like someone picked him from the audience, handed him a bat and told him to get up to the plate. Still in disbelief, Topps snapped his photo. I am glad to see I managed to pull an Indians player from the pack. Excellent!

182 Packs of Baseball - 095 - SPedroia'd

Welcome to this Sunday's edition of "182 Packs."  I should call this the "Late Night" edition since I am posting this so late this evening.

But, the games on after a rain delay and so we will trudge onward, ripping wax with reckless abandon. Or something like that.  Tonight, I am hitting you with a pack of 2009 SP.

Dustin Pedroia - Red Sox
Andy Pettitte - Yankees
 Josh Hamilton - Rangers
James Shield - Rays
Yadier Molina - Cardinals

These are nice-looking cards. The white borders witht he fading colors makes for a pleasant visual effect.  I also like the the images crossing the borders - a fine work of Photoshopping indeed.

A (lack of) Rain Delay

If you've been following along, you know that most of my 182 Packs posts happen at/around 530am. Well, that will not happen on Sunday. So, just to let you know there will be a post for Sunday, but it will be a bit delayed.

On a more upbeat note, I snagged a 10-pack repack box at Target on Saturday, so there are more packs to bust during our season!

182 Packs of Baseball - 094 - Back to the Future's Past

My wife and I have to go shopping for our kids' birthdays. I'm thinking about picking up some discount packs while we're out. We'll see how it goes.

In the meantime, enjoy a pack of 2006 Topps Series 2. This is a rack pack with "18 cards plus 3 extra Topps Vintage cards inside."  Should be interesting:

Marcus Giles - Braves
Freddy Sanchez - Pirates
Shea Hillenbrand - Blue Jays
Johnny Damon/Jason Giambi - Yankees - Bronx Zoo
Danny Haren - A's
Carlos Guillen - Tigers
Eric Milton - Reds
Phil Nevin - Rangers
Willie Eyre - Twins
Scot Shields - Angels
Roberto Hernandez - Pirates
Tim Foli - Mets - 1985 Topps #271 (1968 #1 Draft Pick)
Mike Heath - Cardinals - 1986 Topps Traded #46T
John Farrell - Indians - WAHOO!! - 1988 Topps #533
Checklist 1 of 3
Work Hard/Get Cards promo card
Matt Holliday - Rockies
Buck Showalter - Rangers
Derek Jeter - Yankees
Marlins Team Card
Mark Hendrickson - Rays
Terry Francona - Red Sox
Juan Rincon - Twins

You have to wonder how many cards Topps has in its stash that they have included "vintage" cards several times over the years (including the whole 'Cards Your Mom Threw Out').  Well, I have to say, it was fun pulling an Indians player out of the vintage cards. The Tim Foli was a highlight because it is a "vintage" card highlighting a previous vintage card! This was a fun pack in deed.

182 Packs of Baseball - 093 - TGIF

Whew! I don't about the rest of you, but my short week was full of work stuff! And, it is not finished yet, either.  Hopefully, ripping the wrapper off some wax will get us ready for the weekend!

Today, we've got 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars

Hank Aaron Puzzle - 49, 50, 51
Carlton Fisk - White Sox - Pop-up
Tom Brunansky - Twins
Ozzie Virgil - Phillies
Tommy Herr - Cardinals

That fisk is pretty nice. I wish they would have cropped his back leg out instead of the front one, though. Brunansky's card looks like something from the minors. Kinda weird.  Meanwhile, Tommy Heer is about to send that ball flying - straight up into the air. Pop Fly Out, I would guess.

182 Packs of baseball - 092 - Quite an achievement

Wow! I don't know how many of you watched a fireworks display last night, but we watched the live feed of the celebration in New York City. Absolutely gorgeous!  I love fireworks. I love them almost as much as busting wax. Almost.

Today, I am opening a pack of 1994 Fleer Ultra Series II

Kirby Puckett - Twins
Pedro Munoz - Twins
Paul Spoljaric - Blue Jays
Rick Helling - Rangers (Inadvertently listed as Angels previously)
Andres Galarraga - Rockies
 Luis Polonia - Yankees
Darrin Jackson - White Sox
Don Mattingly - Yankees
Julio Franco - White Sox
Lenny Dykstra - Phillies
Allen Watson - Cardinals
Tony Longmire - Phillies
Ray Lankford - Cardinals
Joe Carter - Indians/Blue Jays - Career Achievement Award - WAHOO!! Triber City!

I don't believe I have seen that Carter card before. It is 1 of 5 in the "Achievement Award" insert set. That is fantastic! Then, we look at Mattingly in there, too. I did not realize he was still playing in '94. Shows how much I was paying attention. we've got several team stars and MLB stars in there as well. The Helling card is a thing of photographic genius - a Rangers (oops, previously listed as an Angels) player with a great sky behind him. Wait. Is that photoshopped? Man, I hope not.

**Update - Thanks to Kevin for pointing out that I listed Helling on the wrong team. Evidently, I can't read text, look at caps, nor read jerseys.

182 Packs of Baseball - 091 - Happy Independence Day!

Happy 4th of July!  Today not only marks our nation's celebration of its freedom from England, but this also marks the theoretical halfway point of the 182 Packs break!  Now, that is some kind of special right there.  And, since this is a special day on many levels, I am celebrating by busting open several packs of cards.

I am starting with 2008 Topps Jumbo Pack Updates and Highlights (Autos, Presidential stamps, First Lady Cut Signatures). Let's see if we can start this day off with a bang!

Jeremy Affeldt - Reds
Greg Norton - Braves
Raul Chavez - Pirates
Bartolo Colon - Red Sox
Emmanuel Burris - Giants
Nick Adenhart - Angels
Clayton Kershaw - Dodgers
Paul Bell - South Africa ('09 World Baseball Classic)
Johan Santana - Twins - Year in Review
Ryan Dempster - Cubs - All-Stars
Asdrubal Cabrera - Indians - WAHOO!! - Highlights
Lance Berkman - Astros - Home Run Derby
Milton Bradley - Rangers - All-Stars
Ervin Santana - Angels - All-Stars
Jorge Velandia - Indians - WAHOO another Triber!
Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)/Evan Longoria (Rays) - Classic Combos
Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)/David Ortiz (Red Sox) - Classic Combos
Joe Blanton - Phillies
Eddie Guardado - Rangers
Brett Tomko - Royals
Emil Brown - A's
Brad Wilkerson - Blue Jays
Carlos Villanueva - Brewers
Freddie Bynum - Orioles
Burke Badenhop - Marlins
Jose Arredondo - Angels
Burke Badenhop - Marlins - Gold (1982/2008)
Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)/Albert Pujols (Cardinals) - Classic Combos
Connor Robertson - Diamondbacks
Josh Hamilton (Rangers)/JD Drew (Red Sox) - Classic Combos
Billy Wagner - Mets - All-Stars
Chipper Jones - Braves - All-Stars
Lance Berkman - Astros - All-Stars
Carlos Quentin - White Sox - All-Stars
Rich Harden - Cubs
Matt Holliday - Rockies - All-Stars
ToppsTown Card (with unused code)
David Wright - Mets - Work Hard, Get Cards insert

Wow! First, two Indians players in the pack and one highlights an unassisted triple play from Cabrera. Awesome! The Badenhop gold card sure is nice to behold for sure. There several ML stars and team stars throughout the pack as well. Not a bad way to kick off this 4th of July.

Next, I am opening a pack of 1997 Pinnacle Hobby New:

Cal Ripken Jr - Orioles - East Meets West
Denny Neagle - Braves - East Meets West
Chuck Knoblauch - Twins

John Valentin - Red Sox
Barry Bonds - Giants
Chipper Jones - Braves - AURA
Tony Gwynn - Padres
Marty Cordova - Twins
Bobby Bonilla - Marlins
Alex Gonzalez - Blue Jays

Ripken, Jones, Bonds* and Gwynn all in the same pack!? Excellent! And, what a great way to celebrate today by having a couple "East Meets West" cards in there. Why the * next to Bonds? Well, I know some baseball fans/collectors are non too keen on him, so they might not group Bonds with the rest of the names there. I would. And did.

Are you still with me?  Are you reading along here?  Well, if so, then your reward is another pack of cards to bust open: 2008 Topps Opening Day.  Wow, this is a nice "patriotic" pull!

Alex Rodriguez - Yankees
Lyle Overbay - Blue Jays
Jason Bay - Pirates

Gum in a wrapper
David Wright - Mets - Work Hard, Get Cards insert
Freddy Sanchez - Pirates
Nick Swisher - A's
Clay Buchholz - Red Sox

Wow, are these cards RED! You won't miss these in a pile of cards. Should I randomize the gum? I'll let you decide.

But, wait! There's more! Oh, heck, yeah! Why stop at three packs when it is the FOURTH of July!?  That's right, let's open up another for good measure. How about 2009 Upper Deck Artifacts - A Piece of History.

Lastings Milledge - Nationals
Corey Hart - Brewers
18th Amendment - Historical Moments (pink?)
Michael Bowden - Red Sox
Baseball Hall of Fame Opens - Historical Moments

Well, if you are going to pull a historical moment, the opening of the BBHOF would be a great one to pull. Excellent!  The BBHOF offers a slew of programs that schools can participate in through videoconferencing. I've attended several held for area students here: Lou Gehrig, Geogrpahy of Baseball, Special Needs, and more. Great stuff!  As for the pack, I don't know if htere is significance in the 18th Amendment card being pink, so please fill me in.

That wraps up today's breaks!  Thanks for playing along and I hope you have a safe, wonderful 4th of July celebration!!

182 Packs of baseball - 090 -

I hope everyone is doing well!  My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the recent storms and horrendous wildfires across our country.  I realize that opening packs of cards is nothing compared to what many of you may be going through, and I just wanted you to know that I am praying.

Turning our eyes toward today's pack of cards, we find 2009 O-Pee-Chee:

Brian Anderson - White Sox
Scott Feldman - Rangers (Black Border)

Kerry Wood - Cubs - 20th Anniversary Retrospective
Jose Reyes - Mets - Moments

Saul Rivera - Nationals
Ken Griffey Jr - Mariners

Well, not a bad mix of players.  The Rivera card looks cool with all the matching reds. The Reyes card celebrates a guy who fell short of hitting for the cycle. Wow, not sure I would want *that* to be a celebrated "moment."
