182 Packs of Baseball - 057 - May-O! Maaaayyy-O! Daylight come...

Come Mister Tally Man, tally me base-ball packs.  Ah, yes, we have reached the end of May... Call it "Sinko No Mayo" if you will.  On second thought, let's not. Instead, let's reach into the magic box of cards and see what's in store.  Does May go out like a lion or a lamb?  (I don't even know what that means in relation to busting wax)

We end the month of May by ripping the cover off a 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars with pop-up.  I can see the pop-up through the cellophane. Someone is going to be very, very happy.

Hank Aaron - Puzzle 7, 8, 9
Eddie Murray - Orioles - Pop-Up

Willie Hernandez - Tigers
Jose Cruz - Astros
Bert Blyleven - Indians - WAHOO!! We've seen this a time or two, so doubles are in for sure!

See?  Did I tell you someone would be happy about that pop-up?!  Eddie Murray, man!  That is fantastic. I can't even come up with anything else to say after that. Just, wow!

Each day of the regular baseball season, I am busting open a pack of baseball cards.  These are packs that I have laying around and/or that I have purchased recently on a whim.  I list the cards in the pack and scan in some of them.  I shoot for 9 cards, but sometimes I may scan more, other times fewer.  It all depends on how things hit me in that particular pack.  Oh yes, there will be duplication.  I have a TON of packs from certain brands/years.  I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

For those keeping score, I know there are not actually 182 GAMEDAYS in the 2012 season.  I am counting ALL the days between Opening Day and the last day of the regular season.  Frankly, it's easier that way.  Thanks for playing along.

Also, you are welcome to claim teams/players (Max 3 total). Rules are at the following:

182 Packs of Baseball - 056 - HoJo and Konerko

Well, the 1995 Topps Series 1 packs seem to be floating near the surface, I guess.  I feel like I just busted one of these recently.  Then again, with as many duplicate packs that I have of various years, we are bound to see runs of certain packs.  I wish I had taken a picture of the box before I started. Ah well, we move forward.

1995 Topps Series 1 Power pack:

Chili Davis - Angels
Charlie O'Brien - Braves
Charles Nagy - Indians - WAHOO! Great Indians pull!
Howard Johnson - Rockies

Dave Weathers - Marlins
Terry Shumpert - Royals
Mike Kelly - Braves
Joey Hamilton - Padres
Wil Cordero (Expos)/Cal Ripken Jr (Orioles) - Topps All Stars
Craig Orebeck - White Sox
Deion Sanders - Reds - NL Stolen Base Leader
Gerald Williams - Yankees
Paul Konerko - Dodgers - Draft Pick
Eduardo Perez - Angels - CyberStats
Ricky Bones - Brewers

Obviously, I am thrilled to pull a Triber out of the hat, er pack!  I believe we've seen some of these guys before, so hopefully some of you waiting on duplicates will score a few of these.  By the way, I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but just as a reminder: everyone who signs up gets SOMETHING.  Even if you strike out in the doubles department, you will end up with cards that fit your selected team/player/category.  They may not come directly from this break, but all who enter walk away with cards.  That is how I play.

182 Packs of Baseball - 055 - Before the drug, there was YAZ

We are approaching the end of May pretty quickly.  It's hard to believe June will be here in just a few days.  And, you know what happens when June hits, right?  That's right: the countdown begins!  The date when my first Indians game in Cleveland will be here soon! Wahoo!

But, before I get ahead of myself, we've got some bustin' goin' on.  How about a pack of 2010 Topps Update Series?  Okay.

Evan Longoria - Rays - AL All-Star
Josh Reddick - Red Sox
Joe Saunders - Diamondbacks
Brian McCann - Braves - NL All-Star

Jon Lester - Red Sox - AL All-Star
Vladimir Guerrero (Rangers?)/Miguel Cabrera (Tigers) - AL All-Star
Ryan Theriot - Dodgers
Christian Guzman - Rangers
Sean Marshall - Cubs
Carl Yastrzemski - Red Sox (Blue Back mini Game card)
Topps Million Card Giveaway
Andre Ethier - Dodgers - Topps Attax

Ouch. Was Guerrero with the Angels or the Rangers during the 2010 All-Star Game?  Well, let me know and that's the team he'll be associated with here.  Man, we ended up with some cards out of this one.  The Yaz is a very cool little card indeed!

182 Packs of Baseball - 054 - Boggs'd Down

Day 54, where are you? Oh, now there's a reference I'm sure many folks aren't going to get without hitting the old Google.  Maybe not.  Is it a part of our culture enough that folks just "get it?" I dunno.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!  Please take time today to remember those that have served and fallen in the line of serving our country in some way or another.  Without those who have sacrificed their lives, we wouldn't be in the position to write what we want to write, when we want to write it, and where we want to write.
Today's pack comes to us from 1995.  We've got 1995 Topps Series One Power Pack again.  Let's see what we've got:

Chris Bosio - Mariners
Ruben Sierra - A's
Joe Orsulak - Mets
Kevin Appier - Royals
Chad Curtis - Angels
Bret Barberie - Marlins
Wade Boggs - Yankees
Jaime Navarro - Brewers
Calvin West - Reds - Future Star
Greg Maddux (Braves) and David Cone (Royals) - 1994 Topps All Stars
Matt Williams (Giants) and Wade Boggs (Yankees) - 1994 Topps All Stars
Gerald Williams - Yankees
Mike Butcher - Angels
Barry Larkin - Reds - CyberStats
Carl Willis - Twins

Orsulak and Vicaino in a "high ten" is a cool card moment. Bret Barbarie looks like he is trying to catch a beach ball at that angle. We got two Boggs cards in th epack.  I think that's always a plus! I don't know Reese from Adam, so how'd he turn out as a future star for the Reds? Let me know. Maddux and Cone on a single card would have quite a nice pull back then. I think we've seen the Williams/Boggs card already. The Larkin CyberStats shows a bunt gone by. Did he get the bat back in time? I'd like to think so.

182 Packs of Baseball - 053 - I Believe I Can Fly

We are quickly approaching the end of another month of regular-season baseball.  I don't know about you, but I'm glad we've got plenty more baseball to come.  Because more baseball means more random packs to bust open.

Today, we've got a pack of 1995 Topps Series 1.  It's a "Power Pack," so here's hoping for some POWER!

Lance Johnson - White Sox
Derek Lilliquist - Indians - WAHOO!  That's what I'm talkin' about.
Alex Diaz - Brewers
Charlie Hayes - Rockies

Doug Drabek - Astros
John Flaherty - Tigers
Ron Darling - A's
Scott Kamieniecki - Yankees
Scott Servais - Astros
Carlos Baerga (Indians)/Bret Boone (Reds) - 1994 Topps All Stars - WAHOO! Another Indians player!
Dan Smith - Rangers
Bret Wagner - Cardinals - 1994 Draft Pick
Dustin Hermanson - Padres - 1994 Draft Pick
Ruben Sierra - A's - CyberStats
Terry Pendleton - Braves

Two Indians cards (okay, so one is a tag-team card) is fantastic!  The card that get smy vote for best photo, though, is Alex Diaz - that is one kick-butt mid-air doozie, right there.  Excellent.

182 Packs of baseball - 052 - Court Jester?

I've been trying to come up with funny, insightful intros for these daily pack breaks.  As I am sure you are painfully aware, that doesn't always happen.  I suppose it is akin to the local radio guy that has to announce every, single game of the season.  Eventually, you say the same kinds of things over and over until you're either spouting cliche's or creating them.

Whatever the reason you've stopped by, I appreciate it!   And, without further delay, let's open up some 1998 Stadium Club Hobby "Evens."

Pat Mears - Twins (I am 99% sure we've seen this guy before.)
Mario Valdez - White Sox
Todd Stottlemyre - Cardinals
Jason Isringhausen - Mets
Mark McGwire - Cardinals - Royal Court Insert
Matt Beech - Phillies
Jose Vidro - Expos
Jim Leyritz - Red Sox - Transactions
Andy Benes - Diamondbacks - Expansion
Checklist 1 of 2

What!? Checklist 1 of 2? That's a first here, I believe. Oh, and a little while ago, back on Day 34 or so, we saw some of these exact cards in the exact order as we see here.  We're talking duplicates, folks! More cards to go around. Wahoo!

182 Packs of Baseball - 051 - What's in a name?

It occurred to me that I really misnamed this little project.  I am not opening 182 packs of cards.  Rather, I am opening packs of cards for 182 consecutive days.  Maybe a better name should have been, "182 Days of Baseball Packs" or something.  Well, should I continue this endeavor next season, I'll go with a better title.  As it is, I have no idea how many actual packs I will open.  I think my intention was one pack per day, but then I started throwing in "Double Header Days" and things like yesterday's milestone break.  Ah well, I don't think anyone out there is complaining.

As it is, we move forward!  Today's pack is a 1997 Pinnacle Hobby NEW

Bill Pulsipher - Mets
Cecil Fielder - Yankees
Pat Hentgen - Blue Jays
Eddie Murray - Angels
Jason Giambi - A's
Raul Mondesi - Dodgers
Derek Bell - Astros
Paul Sorrento - Mariners
Royce Clayton - Cardinals
Eric Young - Rockies

I can't recall off the top of my head, but I believe we've got several players in here that we've seen before in the '97 Pinnacle New set.  That means we've got cards to spread around!

182 Packs of Baseball - 050 - 10-pack Milestone

The Big Five-Oh!  We've hit fifty days of the baseball season, folks!  That kind of milestone calls for something special.  So, I am cracking open TEN packs today! Wahoo!  I reached in and randomly selected ten packs.  For the purpose of this post, I am grouping any similar packs together.  It should make following along a bit easier.  Guess we'll see!

First up: 3 packs of 2006 Topps Opening Day

Nick Johnson - Nationals
Chien-Ming Wang - Yankees
Bryan Bullington - Pirates Rookie
John Koronka - Cubs
Walter Young - Orioles Rookie
Albert Pujols - Cardinals
Nick Johnson - Nationals SI Kids

Melvin Mora - Orioles
Zack Greinke - Royals
Joe Mauer - Twins
Nick Johnson - Nationals (Hey, a duplicate!)
Chien-Ming Wang - Yankees (I see a pattern here)
Bryan Bullington - Pirates Rookie (Uh, the exact pattern)
Nick Johnson - Nationals SI Kids (you are kidding, right?)

Johan Santana - Twins
Scott Rolen - Cardinals
Miguel Tejada - Orioles
Michael Young - Rangers
David Ortiz - Red Sox
Lyle Overbay - Blue Jays
Roy Oswalt - Astros SI Kids

Talk about bad colation. Those first two packs were spot on once you hit Johnson.

Next up, 4 packs of 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars oversized and pop-ups:

Hank Aaron puzzle 4, 5, 6
Graig Nettles - Padres - Pop-up
Damaso Garcia - Blue Jays
Darryl Strawberry - Mets
Dan Petry - Tigers

Hank Aaron puzzle 61, 62, 63
Tony Gwynn - Padres - Pop-up
Dan Petry - Tigers (There's a double!)
Tony Pena - Pirates
Rickey Henderson - Yankees

Hank Aaron puzzle 31, 32, 33
Terry Kennedy - Padres - Pop-up
Tim Raines - Expos
George Brett - Royals
Nolan Ryan - Astros

Hank Aaron puzzle 52, 53, 54
Tommy Herr - Cardinals - Pop-up
Cecil Cooper - Brewers
Scott Garrelts - Giants
Don Mattingly - Yankees

Man, did we pull some whoppers there!  And, I believe more than few cards we've seen before!  That is good news for the folks patiently waiting on the duplicates lists!

Now, let's jump to a pack of 2010 Bowman Chrome.  Three whole cards in each pack... Wow.

Chone Figgins - Mariners
Alfonso Soriano - Cubs
Chris Schwinden - Mets - 1st Bowman

Well?  Whatcha think about that one?  I'd say 1-for-3, but I could see 2-for-3 being argued.  Who is Schwinden?

The next pack is a Tri-Star Hidden Treasures Chase Repack.  This is the one where you could find the Wagner T206. Right.

Mike Kingery - Mariners - 1986 Fleer
Alex Hernandez - Marlins - 1997 Score
Alex Hernandez - Marlins - 1997 Score (Not a typo. They were stuck together.)
Mike Schooler - Mariners - 1990 Topps
Rickey Henderson - A's - 1991 Star Yellow Front

The Henderson is awesome.  If it weren't for the break, this would go in my "Non-Tribers" collection. Congrats to the winner of that one!

The final pack for the 50th day of baseball goes to 2005 Fleer Ultra.  Let's see what we've got in here:

Livan Hernandez - Expos
Al Leiter - Mets
Cliff Floyd - Mets
Greg Maddux - Cubs - Follow the Leader
Jose Reyes - Mets (Okay, really, how many Mets can be in one pack?)
Ichiro Suzuki - Mariners
Scott Podsednik - Brewers - Gold Medallion Die Cut
Sluggers.com Code Card
Tony Batista - Expos

Certainly some big names in that pack.  One "hit" was the Gold Medallion 1:3 packs. Works for me.  A lot of Mets showed up in this pack.

182 Packs of Baseball - 049 - Future Star Understatement

Forty-Nine days of opening packs and the season is humming right along.  Hope everyone's enjoying the season through baseball packs.  I'm glad you stopped by to hang out and see what we've got today.  And, what we've got is a pack of 1995 Topps Series 1.  Fifteen cards per pack. Let's dig in:

Steve Cook - Pirates
Kent Mercker - Braves
Bob Hamelin - Royals
Kenny Rogers - Rangers
Mike Mussina - Orioles
John Wetteland - Expos
Brent Mayne - Royals
Kenny Lofton - Indians - WAHOO!! Sultan of Steal. Great!
Armando Benitez - Orioles - Star Track
Ray McDavid - Padres - Star Track
Carl Willis - Twins
Derek Jeter - Yankees - Future Star
Jeff Branson - Reds
Jose Vizcaino - Mets - CyberStats
Matt Williams (Giants)/Wade Boggs (Yankees) - 1994 Topps All Stars

Where do I start?  Kenny Lofton, Mike Mussina... Yeah, I know. Derek (expletive) Jeter's "Future Star" card.  The Vizcaino CyberStats is very cool and shiny.  And we finish off with the Williams/Boggs tag team move.  Nice.

I will, however, try to mix things up throughout the season.

a -STACK- of cards from BackStopcards

A little while ago, BackStopCards wrote me and asked if I would like some Indians cards.  Of course I would!  He said he'd send a "stack" my way.  In the meantime, I put together a stack to send to him in return.  As you may know, my supply of "extra" cards is pretty depleted these days.  After all, I held my "last" giveaway some time ago (though, I have done a couple since then), which pretty well emptied the Tribecards coffers.  I know that Marcus said a trade wasn't necessary, but I can already say with utmost confidence: My return stack isn't anywhere near the size of the "stack" he sent me.

As it turned out, his "stack" was actually THREE stacks.  There are a LOT of Tribers here!  There was no way I could scan them all, but I did take pictures of all the cards, then scanned in nine of them just to give you an idea as to what he sent.  Before I go any further: THANK YOU, Marcus!! Wow!! This was WAY more than I ever anticipated.

As you can see, there are Indians cards from a variety of years, brands, and styles!

There is a wide range of players, too.  Some are superstars. Some are Indians stars. Some are folks that faded into the history books.

I was amazed as I looked through cards I know very well from my collection and cards that I don't believe I've seen before at all!  There will certainly be some new members of the Tribecards family.

The Leaf Franco card below is the Canadian version.  The back has both English and French.  They are easy to spot because of the green leaf on the front.  I love the action shot of Fukudome.  The new Bowman cards are very nice - especially the GOLD ones.

I don't believe I have the "Great Gloves" card below. In fact, I don't recall seeing it before.  I included Barker because he threw a PERFECT GAME! And the Topps Stars Justice is way better in person. Haha!

I received a couple of the "Lemon" style cards.  I am a huge fan of team photo cards.  I know players come and go, but I like seeing the whole team pictured together.  The Bowman Chrome are very nice, too!  Excellent cards!

Thanks again to Marcus over at backstopcards.blogspot.com for some incredible Indians cards!!

182 Packs of Baseball - 048 - In the crease

I mentioned in one of the earlier breaks that I am trying to incorporate more recent packs and more of the same packs (that is, doing things to encourage duplication).  Well, I don't think I've opened one of these yet, but it is (sorta) recent.  Today, I grabbed a pack of 2009 Goudey.

Derrick Lee - Cubs (and a bit creased to boot)
Kelly Shoppach - Indians - WAHOO!! Wow, that is awesome!
Sparky Lyle - Yankees
Travis Snider - Blue Jays
Adrian Gonzalez - Padres

Wow, a Triber in a pack of five cards. Sweet!  I did a quick check and I already have it.  Timothy, it's all yours, man.  As it turns out, these all have some creasing. The hazards of repacks, I guess. Bummer.

182 Packs of Baseball - 047 - Murphy's Law

I am looking at the card facing me inside the cellophane wrapper, and I believe we have seen this before.  That means, we have at least one double that I recognize! Wahoo!  Sure, I know that may not mean much to you, but I am starting to feel bad for the folks who aren't getting any doubles yet.  I'm just glad there's no admission fee.  Then again, we still have plenty of cards to open up and lots of the same packs in different years/brands.  Today, I've grabbed a 1986 Donruss ML All-Stars pack.

Hank Arron - puzzle 49, 50, 51
Carlton Fisk - White Sox - Pop-up
Jimmy Key - Blue Jays
Dale Murphy - Braves
Phil Bradley - Brewers

Say what!? Dale Murphy!  Now, that's worth sticking around. By far, one of the best pulls from the oversized card set.

Hey, come on over!  Thanks for stopping by on this Sunday for a look at today's pack of cards.  Today, we've got another pack of 1994 Fleer Ultra Series II to rifle through.  I hope we find something really cool in here today.  Well, I'm hoping we find something really cool in any of the packs, really.  And, we have found some inserts, some interesting cards, and certainly players we know by name.  I have no doubt we'll find at least one of those today. Right?

Derek Lilliquist - Indians - WAHOO! I love starting off with a Triber.
Lee Smith - Orioles
Scott Cooper - Red Sox
Orel Hershiser - Dodgers
Damion Easley - Angels
Ryan Klesko - Braves
Bill Pulsipher - Mets
Rich Becker - Twins
Checklist
Turner Ward - Brewers
Pete Smith - Mets
Wayne Gomes - Phillies
Keith Lockhart - Padres
John Kruk - Phillies - Phillies Finest

The "Phillies Finest" cards are a neat change of pace.  The Turner Ward card looks like it came circa 1950-something.  Weird exposure on that one.  Am I the only one that thought "Pulsipher" was actually "Pillpusher?"  I mean, even back then, I thought that was his name. I am one twisted dude.

182 Packs of Baseball - 045 - No blood, no foul

Hey, folks!  How's it going out there?  You're all looking at me like, "Hey, pal, you got some packs?  Well, why don't you start bustin' them open, Circus Boy."*

Reaching in to the box of packs, I pull out a 1997 Pinnacle Hobby. No, not the "NEW" ones, the other ones they made in '97 before they decided to switch to the new design in midstream.

Fernando Valenzuela - Padres
Jason Dickson - Angels
Danny Tartabull - White Sox
Steve Gibralter - Reds
Barry Larkin - Reds
Curt Schilling - Phillies
Juan Gonzalez - Rangers
Bill Swift - Rockies
Kevin Mitchell - Reds
Roger Clemens - Red Sox

Wow. Fernando... I still remember when he first came to the Bigs and was touted the next best thing since Cy Young himself.  Or, somthing like that.  There sure a re a LOT of Reds in this pack. About a third of the cards are Reds.  This one also gave us a look at some serious names in baseball at the time: Larkin, Schilling, Gonzalez, Clemens... Not a bad pack at all.

*Opening line 'borrowed/modified' from one of Brian Regan's acts.

182 Packs of Baseball - 044 - Anniversary Post!

Today is May 18th!  My wife and I got married Twenty-One years ago today!  Wahoo!!

In honor of that day, I bought a handful (literally - there are five) of packs from 1991 Topps!  If you've seen "My Card" over there on the right of the blog, you may recognize the layout as being the 1991 Topps design.  Yes, it is specifically the 1991 Topps because of our anniversary.

Also in honor of our special day, I will scan in 21 of the cards - one for each year my wife has put up with my craziness.  I Love You, Shan!

PACK ONE:

Jay Bell - Pirates
Pete Harnisch - Orioles
Edgar Diaz - Brewers
Tom Gordon - Royals (Great "unrelated" story by Stephen King, BTW)
Willie Blair - Blue Jays (I made a Willie/Linda Blair combo card once)
Greg Swindell - Indians - WAHOO! A Triber in the first pack!
Rich Rodriguez - Padres
Gregg Olson - Orioles (Not one of the Olson twins)
Instant Win Card (loser)
Mike Benjamin - Giants
Dave Henderson - A's (always great to pull my namesake!)
Gary Sheffield - Brewers (One of faves in my younger days)
Francisco Oliveras - Giants
Mark Portugal - Astros
Mike Hartley - Dodgers
Tony Pena - Red Sox (I grew up watching him play for the Bucs!)

PACK TWO:

Tino Martinez - Mariners
Marty Clary - Braves
Gene Harris - Mariners
Tom O'Malley - Mets
Donnie Hill - Angels
Kirk Gibson - Dodgers (Awesome!)
Lou Whitaker - Tigers (Excellent!)
Lance Johnson - White Sox
Instant Win Card (loser)
Carlton Fisk - White Sox (Are you kidding me!?)
Julio Franco - Rangers (I hated it when he left the Tribe)
Mike Scioscia - Dodgers (Holy cow! Great!!)
Hal Morris - Reds
Darrin Jackson - Padres
Dennis Eckersley - A's (Man, this pack is fantastic!)
Jose Uribe - Giants (another of my younger-years favorites)

PACK THREE:

Pete O'Brien - Mariners
Mike Kingery - Giants
Wilson Alvarez - White Sox
Kelly Gruber - Blue Jays
Instant Win Card (loser)
Doug Drabek - Pirates - All-Star National League card

Jeff Montgomery - Royals
Marc Newfield - Mariners - #1 Draft Pick
Ron Darling - Mets (Nice get!)
Charlie Hough - Rangers (Excellent!)
Scott Scudder - Reds (One of my favorite player names ever)

Joe Carter - Padres (Oh, man! That is great!!)
Bob Patterson - Pirates
Jim Neidlinger - Dodgers

Rodney McCray - White Sox

PACK FIVE:

Dave Stieb - Blue Jays
Oddibe McDowell - Braves (Another favorite name of mine)
Andy McGaffigan - Royals (Any relation to Jim Gaffigan? Probably not... /oh, he's gonna get in trouble for that one./
Joe Morgan - Red Sox (No, not THAT Joe Morgan, the other one)
Bryn Smith - Cardinals
Mickey Tettleton - Orioles (Love the grin there, buddy! Enjoy yourself!)
Steve Crawford - Royals
Cito Gaston - Blue Jays
Instant Win Card (loser)
Ivan Calderon - White Sox
Jose Rijo - Reds
Bill Pecota - Royals
Gary Wayne - Twins
Dennis Cook - Dodgers (Before the goofy Indians cards he made)
Dave Rhode - Astros (I always though his name should have ended with an "S")
Nelson Liriano - Twins (Doing his "Billy Ripken" impression)

Wow, I'd have to go back over that list, but I don't think there was a duplicate in the lot.  I have never WISHED for duplicates so much in my life.  Never fear, folks!  EVERYONE will get cards out of this break - you should know by now that there will be "surprises" for everyone!

Thanks for joining me on this special day for me and my wife!  What did I get her?  Well, for Mother's Day, the kids and I got her an iPhone 4S and part of that was for our Anniversary.  I am also sending her roses - her favorite flower.

*I took note of adding subtitles to the posts. For the record, those are added AFTER the pack(s) is(are) opened.

*The gum from these packs will not be given away.  Though, admittedly, I am tempted to try a bite.  The fear of puking my guts up stops me from following through.
